The blatant inequity in education cross the country is shameful.
Yes, those Oklahoma liberals insisted on tax breaks for horizontal wells and less gross production tax here in Oklahoma.
For years now Oklahoma has had:
A republican governor;
A republican house
A republican senate
A republican Secretary of Education
and we're blaming liberals for education.
I'd go along with the conservative "voucher" narrative if it would work, bur it doesn't appear to be working any better than regular public schools. Maybe the system has worked out in some state I'm unaware of.

Ha! Who sets policy and budgets for education in your part of the world? I know who sets them in mine. I am willing to pay $18k in additional property taxes each year to support local schools - especially given the results.
If your local schools suck, a portion of the blame can go to Washington, but more should go to your state and local leaders as well as the community that won't provide adequate funding.

I had a great education growing up in the 80's.
Well have there been any conservatives in charge of Oklahoma's education lately? If not Mary, how about the House, Senate and Secretary of Education?
My son had a great education in Oklahoma as well (he graduated 2 years ago). Of course, he wasn't hamstrung by poorly funded and operated urban schools.
But hey, as long as things are great for us and ours, what's the problem?

I have looked at good students' rural school transcripts to for about 20 years - probably 10 class A schools, and three schools that are 3A or higher. Generally, and there are notable exceptions, the smaller the school, the worse the test scores and less challenging the curriculum.
The test scores have gone consistently down hill across the board.
In your very own post you single out a data point that is very helpful in understanding the allocation of scarce resources. If you want to understand and work toward a solution.
You have pushed two points on here that have just been conclusively rebutted: Rural schools superior to urban and liberals are at fault. This "continue to starve education and start charter schools" ethos will be the third. The next time a conservative accuses liberals of being stubborn I'm going to point to this thread.
I am not ideologically opposed to charter schools, but their track record in Oklahoma hasn't been better. Some specific schools do better, some do worse. It's proven right here in your home state to not be a solution, but... maga I guess.
Please tell me you aren't comparing "so-white" Portland's urban areas with those of LA, Chicago, Atlanta, or other disproportionately minority urban center.

Isn't Oklahoma kinda screwed with the state Constitution as far as how school districts are established? Does that amendment need to be revoked?

Nowhere did I say rural schools are superior to urban. In fact, think I was very clear that both are underfunded and suffering compared to wealthy suburban schools.
