Democratic Debate: Night Two

Two thoughts as someone who works for campaigns. First, I hope they are getting the message that it is time to pivot off of a socialist message. Second, Butigieg's message tonight was very tight. He has some good people in his campaign helping him and I am willing to get a $100 bill that he will be top 5 in polling leading in to the primaries.
I'm sure my performance tonight in this thread has been completely disqualifying for any campaign but DM me.

This entire video is so ridiculous it could literally be read from a group of actors and be taken as satire, but holy crap on the last lady’s answer. This is the only clip I’ve seen of her and I’m probably now voting for her. I have zero idea what she is talking about but I love it!

I'm not sure what I think of Biden's performance. Some good moments, some not so good moments. Will be interesting to see how it plays post-debate. Sanders didn't have a good night. He seemed over shadowed by Harris and Biden. The magic of 2016 just isn't there at this point.

And of course, Kamala Harris clearly is the winner tonight.
Just saw the last part. Think Butt and Hick were the winners.

My thoughts:

Winner:
Kamala Harris - although I think her closing statement could have been much much stronger

Runner(s) Up:
Mayor Pete - had some hiccups though with the BLM question. I still believe that he's one of the most polished and the being a Gay Vet will be interesting moving forward in this primary season
Yang - because he's so different

Losers (margin still TBD):
Sanders - All sizzle, no actual information on implementation for his policies
Biden - they came at him at times tonight and he wasn't as strong in his emotion, not going to play well. He needs to come with the passion to back up his actions in the Senate and as VP.

Good Points but not enough coverage: Hickenlooper

In attendance to just say crazy things and make me jealous of his tie: Swalwell

I'm not sure I'd rank Harris as finishing better than the others, and as I said before I thought Hickenlooper ended on a high note. I completely agree that Biden looked bad. Twice he called time on himself so he wouldn't have to finish his answer. And several others scored points on him directly. Bernie also floundered to me. He was all talking points and zero policy. As such, I also think Warren is a winner tonight as Bernie's losses are likely her gain.

You bring up a great point that I failed to mention. I don't understand at all why he stopped himself in his answers. Talk until the moderator cuts you off or you have a wonderful talking point that will resonate on the TV recaps for the talking heads on MSNBC, CNN, etc.

he stopped himself because he was struggling and knew it.

Good observation that Sanders's losses tonight were Warren's gain. Bernie came off as your crazy uncle that grabs your arm and forces you to listen to his crazy opinions at the family reunion" guy tonight. Warren can actually come to the front with a refined message now that she was passive last night (she was only careful to not misstep last night) and bring the Bernie money over to her. Biden came off as riding Obama's coat tails and took a lot of hits on his past voting.

It is a good line, but he does not have the follow up paragraph.

People are shallow. Don't be fooled into thinking that every MAGA voter was looking deeper than the slogan. Obama used a message of "Hope and Change" and convinced a large number that he was a moderate and would legislate in the middle, even though his own voting record said otherwise. Yang's slogan implies his moderate and there is a "bigly" audience looking for that kind of candidate.

Winner: Kamala Harris (she took control of this debate)

Runner-Up: Pete Buttigieg (imagine him on a debate stage with Pence, just saying)

Draw: Joe Biden (will be interesting to see how his performance plays)

Bernie Sanders (didn't stand out tonight but didn't hurt himself)

All the others just blended in together.

Be warned that voters have moved past this superficial passing glance in this election cycle.

First, thanks for responding.

Question: Harris's best results were all around her attacks on Biden. I can agree that she came out ahead. But by definition, that has to be a loss for Biden. Particularly given his front-runner status.

I haven't seen anything that would start a groundswell of support formidable enough to topple Trump.
It's just not there.

(I'll assume from the glaring lack of response, save for one lonely like, thx. Sooner67, no one disagrees with my synopsis pontificated above).

Go!

and max of 15 million watched last night and maybe 20mm tonight.

Trump 2020

I'll be curious what the ratings look like for the 2 debates. And remember, not everyone who watched them is a lib. I watched, and I'm pretty sure none of the lefties around here would claim me.

Harris had a number of good moments tonight that had nothing to do with Biden. She gave a number of good answers and just has a strong presence about herself.

I think she got the better of her exchange with Biden and accomplished what she wanted . . . the split screen with Biden.

I'm just not prepared to say Biden "lost" tonight. Maybe he did, but I wanna see the impact (if any) his performance coupled with Harris's performance has on the race going forward.

I think clearly this was Kamala Harris' night though and I'm not at all surprised by that. She is the real deal.

Biden has always been terrible in debates. Paul Ryan even beat him in his first public national debate. He’s very slow on his feet and basically ends up chuckling most of the time. I mean, the man actually stopped himself twice for going over time. I’ve literally never seen that even once. He was never going to come out well tonight.

Well the morning after and...

Kamala Harris is clearly the winner, not only of last night but both nights. Everyone is talking about her performance. Also, Democrats are talking about how they would love to see her debate Trump, how they believe she would take it too him and beat him. That is exactly what Harris wants Democrats talking about right now.

I think Warren helped herself too although I really wasn't that impressed with her performance. But it was steady without any blunders and it appeared to have worked.

Castro also appears to have helped himself as well as Buttigieg.

Biden's campaign is in damage control this morning and his performance has open up a door of doubts. Not a strong start for Biden. He has to get tougher.

With all that said, will we see any changes in the polls? Does the current perception impact the race or is there a different perception we are missing? I'm really not sure what impact these early debates are going to have.

Kamala was the winner but she’s also back tracking on her take on private insurance.

Perfect ad for the general; all hands went up for "free health care for all illegals coming". Keep tacking left

Biden is exactly what we thought he was. An older less coherent version of the guy who never polled well the other two times he ran for president.
