Canadian liberal perspective on Trump

The whole Canada situation is very interesting to watch unfold. Once Castro Jr went draconian during Covid I knew that things were going to get interesting for a while.

I think the Canadians dependence on the US has finally sunk in for the Canucks.
Like Bill O'Reilly said last night, Canada needs the US, we don't need them.

That guy sure doesn’t sound like a liberal in that clip. Of course, we have slowly been reconditioned to think left wing lunacy is actually liberalism, so within that context, he could be quite liberal and still sound coherent.
I think he’s on to something with Trump’s approach. Despite the endlessly vapid vitriol spewed by left pundits, Trump can read a room. He would not have accomplished what he has if he couldn’t. I think it’s very plausible that Trump saw the reaction to the initial comments about Canada and doubled down.
The best way to take advantage of an adversary is to get under their skin and manipulate their emotions. You can argue that Trump shouldn’t treat a close ally as an adversary but that argument goes both ways, and Trudeau very much treated Trump as an adversary before Trump said a word.
At the end of the day, Canada has plenty of problems and picking a fight with Trump, regardless of how petty, is a pretty stupid way to try and start addressing them.

And another thing, these leftwing nut leaders around the World know that the leftwing nuts here will stand with them against Trump and America.

Disagree. Picking a fight with the US is exactly what Canada needs. Canada used tariffs for years to support their own national economy and to prop up their own industries, that would otherwise be swallowed by the economic might of the US in a true free trade agreement. They need some way to keep their dollars at home. But tariffs can be retaliated against, as Trump is showing. So how else do you drive an internal buying beyond tariffs? Make the "US" the enemy and nationalize the country's buying power. Which is exactly what is going on.

I dont think its sustainable long-term. Just like historical "Buy American" campaigns never lasted for long. But in the short-term, it does generate "nationalistic fervor" and the benefits there-in, without the liberal government having to hypocritically preach "nationalism".
