Wealthy families give to their foundations. Their foundations give to charities. Not defending the Clinton's and their money laundering foundation, but it doesn't seem crazy.

From what I've read about 10-15% of the Clinton "Foundation" money goes to charity. The rest is doled out as salaries and "expenses." Using that standard, my entire household is a charitable foundation. The Clinton Foundation is nothing more than a slush fund for Hillary and Bill Clinton to do favors for people who give them money.
That's what many foundations are... Foundations are only required to disburse 5% annually to charities. It's a way for wealthy to receive the tax benefits of giving their money away, but they maintain control through their foundation. Control = influence and power. Families often times setup foundations so future generations have jobs. I'm not defending the Clinton Foundation as I think they are corrupt, but this isn't unique to them.

I am not very good at this kind of stuff, but lets say they did do that and it effectively lowered their tax rate from 40% to 38%, on $45MM earnings that would be a pretty good chunk of change. Also, what if they just turned around and paid themselves again and did the same thing next year. Is that possible?

If they distributed money from their foundation to themselves personally then they would have to declare that as income.

What they made or donated was not my question. What I wanted to know is could what I asked happen. Now we know.
