Same basic theory in the fight for Vietnam.....secure the primary cities and provincial capitals as well as what countryside you can. Then hope the populace will embrace a more western type democracy and that hopefully steels their will to fight and convince their country brothers to turn on the Taliban, isis etc.

That country is corrupt, tribal and mostly backwards, can't ever see 100% success there. Have a nephew that is working for the government at a forward area and they get shelled nearly every night, He is making a mint though and honestly if I could rack up a position like his I would roll the dice for two or three years as well.

If the Russians couldn't win going old testament, we definitely aren't going to win with the carrot & stick approach. Makes me sad that we continue to waste life's, money and time there when there are other infinitely more important spots in the world.

The government allowed OBL to rise to power and metastasize. He eventually punches the country in the nose and we have to go to war to end (hopefully) the threat. Just unbelievable how inept the government is at early detection of existential threats or listening to those that see something coming.

I think W was the most open and correct on the strategy - ensure the primary battle front is not American soil. IMO, that is one if, if not the only, real victory - the fight for Afghanistan has sucked resources from other targets. Not certain it is worth the treasure and blood however....

Rd I agree.....and almost included that had OBL waited and decided to use a nerve gas say in the NY or LA subway systems how many more people would have been killed. Its not inconceivable that they would have been far more successful from both a fatality standpoint and ease of getting the material into the US.
