No doubt there is an immense amount of waste in government and we continue to dig ourselves a deeper hole, but I wish people would a LITTLE more compassion for some federal employees. Some agencies most definitely have people who do nothing.
I am a Department of Army Civilian and I don’t rake in $120K+ per year and live on a golf course and waste taxpayer money. When I started in 2016, I made $45K yearly and regularly worked 12 hour days that I wasn’t compensated with OT for. (I know plenty of private sector employees do this, but my point is, there are a lot of hardworking federal employees as well).
I work with teams of soldiers, veterans and wounded warriors every day. I do weekly write ups of my accomplishments and status of all my priority projects to my supervisor and next level supervisor who report directly to our O-6 Commander.
It frustrates me to see some of our hardest working young engineers, who get paid the least and are on their probationary period, worry in the chaos for their job status.
I know private sector employees don’t normally have the job security gov employees do, and I sympathize with that; however, I’d think masses of people aren’t applauding and celebrating the fact that you’ve lost your job with glee and exuberance either. Also, many federal employees generally get paid a lot less to the same job a private sector employee would, you balance that with the insurance benefits and job security.
If I worked in a company in the private sector with 2M plus people and got a mass email on Saturday night with a 48 hour suspense with a threat to my job status (from someone who has been openly hostile to the very existence of my job), I’d start looking elsewhere ASAP.
