Since the other thread wasnt super clear, I thought I'd start one specifically for this dual tonight. Here is the press release from the Ok State.
The Basics
The No. 3 Oklahoma State wrestling team (9-0 overall; 6-0 Big 12) hits the road for a big weekend against No. 5 Northern Iowa on Friday, January 24, and No. 13 Iowa State two days later. Last time out, the Cowboys cruised past No. 22 West Virginia, 30-12, to stay undefeated and continue its historic run of scoring at least 30 team points. This weekend could prove to be Oklahoma State's toughest test yet, however, between a top-five matchup and showdown with the reigning Big 12 champions.
On the Air
Friday's dual is scheduled for a 7 p.m. CT start and will be available for streaming on FloWrestling with Jeff Bradley and Jim Miller on the call. On Sunday, the meeting between the Cowboys and Cyclones will be just the second college wrestling dual ever televised on ESPN, starting at 4 p.m. CT as Shawn Kenney, Rock Harrison and Quint Kessenich call the action. Rex Holt also returns as the voice of Cowboy wrestling to provide live radio coverage, which will be carried on Hot 93.7 KSPI-FM on Friday and Pete 94.3 FM on Sunday. Live stats and results can be found on trackwrestling.com.
The Series: Northern Iowa
Oklahoma State and Northern Iowa have battled 34 times since the initial meeting in 1964, a series that has gone OSU's way in all but four duals. The Cowboys won 18 straight from 1994-2019, but the series has tightened up as of late after wins by the Panthers in two of the last five matchups. Two years ago, an upset pin by 165-pounder Wyatt Sheets proved to be the difference in the Pokes' most recent trip to Cedar Falls as they pulled out a slim 19-17 victory, which was followed up by a 22-12 triumph in Stillwater last season. This will be David Taylor's first time facing Northern Iowa as a head coach, while Doug Schwab has collected two victories in nine tries against Oklahoma State.
IN THE DISTRICT COURT IN AND FOR WOODS COUNTY,
About the Cowboys
The 2024 offseason sparked a new era for Oklahoma State as longtime head coach John Smith announced his retirement and wrestling legend David Taylor was hired as the eighth head coach in program history. That momentum has continued to soar into 2025 following OSU's dominant 9-0 start to the dual season and impressive performance at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Most recently, Oklahoma State took care of No. 22 West Virginia, 30-12, by winning seven of 10 matches and scoring bonus points five times. That performance also extended Oklahoma State's streak of scoring 30+ team points to nine straight duals, which is tied for the program's third-longest single season streak in history. In addition, Cowboy wrestlers have combined for a 48.3% bonus rate through 265 total matches, a percentage that would be highest in program history if the season ended today. Ranked third as a team by the NWCA Coaches Poll, the OSU lineup features seven wrestlers ranked in the top eight and a top-20 representative at every weight class, giving it all the pieces necessary to contend for a team trophy this upcoming March.
National finalist Dustin Plott is back at 184 pounds to lead perhaps the deepest lineup throughout his time in Stillwater. The three-time All-American owns a 12-1 record this season and beat Oklahoma's DJ Parker back in December to become the 46th wrestler in program history with 100 career victories. Newcomers Dean Hamiti Jr. and Wyatt Hendrickson have both made an immediate impact in their first year as Cowboys, currently joining Plott at No. 3 in the rankings. Both wrestlers are undefeated and widely considered two of the biggest bonus-point threats in the entire country, regardless of weight. In the lighter classes, Troy Spratley and Tagen Jamison are both ranked fourth at 125 and 141 pounds, respectively. Jamison has won 15 of 16 matches this season, while Spratley boasts three victories over top-five opponents. Altogether, half of Oklahoma State's starting lineup resides in the top five at their respective weight class.
The rest of the Cowboy lineup is balanced out by several proven veterans who have each qualified for the national tournament multiple times. One of the main stories of the year has come at 197 pounds, where Luke Surber's had a bounce-back season and is tied for the team lead with nine ranked wins. He sits at No. 7 in the country, just behind sixth-ranked 165-pounder Cameron Amine. Despite breaking into the lineup midway through the year, Caleb Fish also brings a wealth of experience at 157 pounds with 138 career matches to his name.
A Pair of Oklahoma State Wins Would...
• Make OSU 11-0 overall for the second straight year
• Make OSU 8-0 against ranked opponents; 8-0 against the Big 12; 5-0 on the road
• Improve OSU's record against Northern Iowa to 31-4 and 11-3 in Cedar Falls
• Improve OSU's record against Iowa State to 64-22-3 and 25-13-2 in Ames
• Give OSU its second top-five win of the season and fifth in its past six tries
• Make OSU 20-1 against ranked opponents since the start of last season
• Extend OSU's win streak against the Big 12 to 19 and make it 24-1 in its last 25 conference duals
• Give OSU 11 straight wins on the road
• Improve OSU's record to 41-4 in its past 45 duals overall
