2025 Coaching Carousel

WVU “won” the DeVries sweepstakes last year, but they’re currently learning you don’t always land your top target(s). When DeVries left, they immediately shifted to McCollum. Sounds like Wren mane a serious push, and of course their fans just KNEW Wren would get his guy again. Problem is, he was already pretty far along in negotiations with Iowa, in his home state. (Home town even, I think?) The assumption was that if it wasn’t McCollum, they’d get Jarred Calhoun, which could still happen, but it hasn’t yet. I think their fanbase’s new favorite is Medved, especially after Colorado State has performed so well in the Tournament, but once again, he’s already in advanced discussions with Minnesota, in his home state.

They’re currently freaking out, hearing names like Steve Forbes and Bryce Drew, much like we were at one point last year. I suspect they will end up with Calhoun, but it just reminds me of us last year wishing for Sprinkle and Schertz, who were already in advanced discussions with other teams, and in Sprinkle’s case one in his home state. I’m not sure we ever seriously considered Schertz, but I know he was a fan favorite at the time.

Surprised by this move, seems to me Texas could do better.
I think he is the one who can do better. Texas will never be a basketball school. Miller is an excellent coach, but he does his best when he is in a basketball environment, and not a football environment. It will be interesting to see how this works out.

Oh wow, West Virginia really might end up hiring Steve Forbes. Could be worse, but that would definitely be a humbling experience for their fanbase. 🤣

I believe Schertz was all but signed to St Louis by the time we started seriously looking

Must not have watched the game
He said something like, "Yeah, they came back, but really, North Texas was in control the entire game." he also said we're a bad Big12 team but still a B 12 team that will beat most mid majors.

I know what you're talking about. Can't afford to deal with that this season.
Is this really a thing!? I get that Lutz might be intrigued with that job, but would they be intrigued with Lutz? Seems like they’d have their sights set on a more proven guy.

I don’t know. I honestly doubt it this offseason but I am surprised by his name being mentioned randomly for job openings.

I'm also seeing fans of random schools like Drake even trashing our NIL (hopefully just based on last year's results) and almost unanimous agreement that our job is thought of as lowly for power 5. Doesn't seem like long ago many of our big 12 counter parts would have been thought of as lesser jobs. I don't think it takes much to turn the tide but going to need some NIL support to get anywhere.

See someone suggesting that Dean and Keller have entered the portal after requesting more than we are willing to offer. Not sure if this is reliable information. Hard to imagine Keller would feel like he should get a lot more than he did this year.

Some have reported our NIL budget is about 4 times what it was last year. Not sure if accurate or where that puts us compared to our competition but hopefully we will see some positive news soon.

Well considering Dow asked for more money during his freshman season… safe to say most these kids are delusional on their self worth when it comes to NIL.

Some of these kids are lucky to get a scholarship. Crazy it has gotten to a point where these caliber of players are expecting to get rich.

I’m not sure he would start on the student manager team.

We’ve earned every ounce of crap we get from other fanbases at this point, after being a poverty program for the better part of two decades. I hope that Lutz has enough integrity to stick around longer than a year, especially if we’ve truly improved our NIL by a decent margin in year one.

As for Dean and Keller, I saw the same report over on Trilly’s board, though like you said — no idea if the guy who posted it is reliable. But if those two thought that just because they started a bunch of games for a bad team that they deserve a ton of money, when in reality they’re decent bench players on a good team, then good luck to them I guess. Both could probably play bigger roles at a lower level or a smaller role on a higher/equal one.

Hope that’s not true re: Dean. He’s an important roster piece for the defense
He was spectacular at getting steals and starting the break, but I don’t think he was necessarily a lockdown defender, primarily due to his size and lack of athleticism.

Dean was the energizer bunny, but he did a lot of really dumb things by being over aggressive. Lutz chewed him regularly for those mistakes. Offensively, he got a little better as the year went on with his three point shooting, but he was still terrible at getting in too deep and winding up in trouble.
I think he would help us next year, but I also think we could do better with an overall point guard who can create and pass, as well as score some and just play solid defense.
I honestly think he probably overvalues himself, but if he can get more for someone else, so be it.
I’m so fed up with this paying players crap that I don’t care who leaves.

“I must have missed 60 Minutes, what are you saying?”
