OSU won its final game under Jimmy Johnson. I went with a friend and student from OSU.
After the game, we went to the team hotel after not finding any good parties.
We hear there is a gathering of alumni on a certain floor. We are poor students, in T-Shirts, jeans, and tennis shoes. We sheepishly peek in, it is a black tie gathering, small orchestra, everyone dressed very well and dancing.
You could tell everyone had finished up eating.
We turn our heads to leave, and we hear, “Are you OSU students”? We look and it is Governor George Nigh. We say yes sir, forces us to come in. He goes and grabs hotel staff and they set-up a table to feed us dinner. Governor Nigh would not take no for an answer in feeding us. We chat about the game with the Governor while they get a table ready for us.
We sit down and we get served dinner. It was strange and fun at the same time. We were so out of place. We had a few alums come up and introduce themselves and ask us what our major was.
It was not the New Year’s party we had in mind, but if we had found that one, probably would not have remembered it. Friend I was with died a few years ago.
