Oklahoma State athletics ended 2021 fiscal year with $14 million deficit, projects brighter 2022 outlook​

STILLWATER — Though Oklahoma State athletic officials made significant budget cuts to brace for the financial battle caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the athletic department concluded the 2021 fiscal year with a $14.1 million deficit.

All major university athletic departments were hit hard by the pandemic, and that was reflected at OSU by the significant loss in revenue from the previous year, according to documents obtained by USA Today and The Oklahoman.

For the fiscal year of 2021, which ended last June, OSU reported revenue of approximately $64.5 million, down from $93.6 million in the 2020 fiscal year.

The 2020 fiscal year was mildly impacted by the pandemic, particularly with the loss of the Big 12 and NCAA basketball tournaments. But the 2021 fiscal year, which included the 2020 football season, was hit much harder.

Only 25% of seats at Boone Pickens Stadium were filled for football games because of pandemic limitations in place during 2020, which triggered a revenue dip in a variety of areas.

OSU reported athletic operating expenses of roughly $78.7 million for the 2021 fiscal year. That follows $92.5 million in athletic operating for 2020 and $95 million for 2019.

“We cut approximately $18 million from a typical annual budget to get to that number,” OSU senior associate athletic director Kevin Klintworth told The Oklahoman. “The list of revenue streams that were interrupted is endless. Shorter seasons, limited capacity at every venue, losses in sponsorships, ticket sales, concessions, conference revenue, reduced television revenue, parking.

“No revenue stream hit its level from previous years.”

In ticket sales alone, OSU saw a drop from $13.5 million in revenue in 2020 to $4.1 million in 2021. Contributions to the athletic department were down nearly $6 million in 2021.

Klintworth said OSU used “available funds on hand to navigate the shortfall.”

Though the financial numbers from OSU’s 2021 football season are not yet available, the university’s outlook for a return to a full and balanced budget in 2022 is promising.

“Our projections are that we will end this fiscal year with a balanced budget operating with our typical level of annual expenses,” Klintworth said.

So the article says it will cost $275 Trillion between now and 2050 to solve climate change. Also says if we do nothing, that the ecomonic impact of climate change will be $22T/year. Seems like a pretty small savings vs. alternative ways to spend that money to me. $275 Trillion building new airports, roads, railways, CNG power plants and transmission lines, etc around the world would, in my estimation, create significantly greater impact than just $22T/year. Does it make me a science denier if I question whether the opportunity cost of $275T spent on climate change is worth the benefit?

Penn State reversed their Big 10 losses at 141 and 174. That gained them 8 points.
RBY beat Daton that gained them a net 8 points on us.

All of these are results that easily could have flipped the other way.
If they would have flipped we finish at 103.5 and Penn State finished at 97.5.

Any of you workout warriors use an indoor rowing machine consistently? I used a friend’s recently purchased Ergatta a few nights ago and absolutely loved it, but it is the only rower I have used other than the Concept 2. I think a rowing machine might be something I could actually commit to consistently.

OSU quarterback Shane Illingworth enters transfer portal, leaves Cowboys with two scholarship QBs​

STILLWATER — After two seasons at Oklahoma State, quarterback Shane Illingworth has entered the transfer portal, according to multiple reports on Monday.

Illingworth’s departure leaves the Cowboys thin at quarterback for the coming season. Starter Spencer Sanders has two years of eligibility remaining, but behind him, incoming freshman Garret Rangel is the only scholarship quarterback on the roster.

Gunnar Gundy, who redshirted as a freshman this past season, and sophomore Peyton Thompson are walk-ons.

The backup quarterback role has been an important one during Sanders’ time as starter. He has missed most or all of eight games over the past three seasons because of health issues.



Illingworth, a 6-foot-6, 230-pound sophomore from Norco, California, appeared in eight games over two seasons at Oklahoma State, quarterbacking the Cowboys to victories against Tulsa, West Virginia and Kansas in 2020, and against Missouri State in 2021.

A four-star recruit out of high school, Illingworth has four years of eligibility remaining.

We just got word that my MIL Karen has a vascular disease in her brain. She has been having dementia and migraines. Now we understand the disease can only be slowed but not stopped. Her brain will slowly die and there is medication to slow the process but it does not look promising. All prayers appreciated for her and my wife.
