You Don’t Say

I remember listening to Milton Friedman talking about being at a conference with high powered executives of major banks, all of whom were very conservative. The discussion centered around government regulation and over regulation of industry in America, and to the man they all agreed how regulation was bad and ought to be curtailed, at which point he agreed and said deregulation of the banking industry would be a good place to start. “Oh, no,” the conservative bankers were appalled, “banking regulation is crucial to the smooth functioning of society. No, it’s all those other industries where regulation is a burden, but not their industry, certainly not banking!” It appears MAGA sympathizers are following suit. And then we sit around and wonder why we can’t have politically nice things!
