Wrestle offs?

G is extremely talented when on the right track. Surber and Young are much more talented than the upperclassmen. Question is if they are better right now do you redshirt since Iowa is so loaded.

I say start Surber & Young.

Listened to Lee's podcast tonight. Besides the wrestle-off winners, it sounds like Travis Mastro, Voinovich, Haas & Doucet all looked good during the ranking matches.

This. We have an old school coach who has his views on how things should go and decides what gets put out. He didn’t want this years wrestle offs to be public so they aren’t.

Surber, Young and G were the big winners coming out of the weekend. Not sure that means we will see them (especially first two) right out of the gate.

Did he talk about the winner of the 84 match?

I see it both ways on the redshirting. Part of me thinks we are recruiting well enough to just wrestle the best guys. Next year the title is up for grabs. Will guys like Carter, VV and Surber be more ready by wrestling this year or redshirting? I don't know the answer to that and it might be different for each kid but I'm doing whatever makes those guys ready to roll day one next year.

There are no redshirt worries till January.

Air, I am also torn who to redshirt. We will be good this year either way but it would almost have to be so cold in Iowa this winter that they could not wrestle before we could challenge for the title. I do think Carter Young has proved he can step right in as a freshman and I think he will be in the lineup this year. Surber is going to be excellent at 285 but I think he needs another year to mature and grow in strength and size. However, it may be best for him to just get the experience this year. I trust that John and the coaches will make the right decisions and our team will be fun to watch this year.

LETS GO POKES!!!

I think I read somewhere that this year you can wrestle in 5 duals and still redshirt. Plus you can wrestle in the Scuffle and be redshirted so you can redshirt and not lose a year and still get lots of wrestling in ( which would include the Viking Open as per Wrassler's information.

Lee had a good point in the latest podcast. The kids already have an extra year of eligibility due to Covid. I say let the best kids get out on the mat. Don't resign yourself to a loss before the season even starts. We all know how injuries can spiral and really knock a team down. This could happen to any team, even the apparent "shoe-in" winners. How silly would it be to redshirt a bunch of kids and then see Iowa/PSU get injuries or upset in the tourney and we could've been right there to grab the trophy, but couldn't because half our lineup was redshirting. And let's not forget how much the time off held Daton back. Different scenario, but I do think that redshirting is not always a guaranteed "level-up" for the wrestlers. Mat time vs quality opponents as opposed to a year in the room and a few open tournaments.

I say let Surber wrestle if he keeps beating the other guys especially since he is in his 2nd year. Redshirt Carter especially since he barely beat Hone ( I heard 1 point win). Unless he beats Hone with some ease wrestle Hone. 141 a super tough weight class so let Carter Young get better, bigger and stronger and then have 4 more years of eligibility. Carter Young could be very special and he can be a difference maker in the future. If Voinovich or Travis Mastro beats G I say let 1 of them wrestle because 149 is stacked with good young wrestlers.
