1. Validation.
Being hated means that you are being acknowledged (e. g. for your effort and interest), and it is seemingly much more easy to be negatively recognized than it is to be positively regarded. It requires less “energy” and personal expenditure, and for a more “certain” “reward”, than the effort and cost required to gamble for the position of being “liked”. This is all a sad fallacy however, and generally stems from previous (traumatic) experiences of being liked but losing favour… leading to the belief that what people “hate” is more shared and easy to achieve than conforming to what people reliably “like” (e. g. people like to be listened to, validated, accepted, not judged… that’s pretty damned reliable and not that difficult to do either).
2. Control.
Being hated is (in these people’s minds) much more “certain” and “stable” than being liked is (as there “are” so many more ways to be hated than there are to be liked). The person who sets out to be hated has less to worry about in terms of losing their “status” of being regarded in a specific way (e. g. if the person has had previous experience of being liked, only to later be ignored or disliked, they may not want to “take the chances” of putting themselves “out there” and being vulnerable). Such a person generally may display and feel a superficially low sense of self worth, that is, at its root, petulant and entitled.
3. Boredom.
A person may claim that they “like” to be hated because irritating and hurting people gives them a respite from boredom, or perhaps, provides some meagre “thrill” or “high”. They may even claim to be “sadistic”, and, for some, there may be an element of genuine sadism in the motivation.
4. Instrumental manipulation.
The person may see being “hated” as an essential component or step in the manipulation of another individual or group. The individual/group that “hates” them may likewise be perceived as an enemy of the person who “likes” to be hated (by that individual or group only), and “achieving” that “hated” status may provide them valuable social capital to another individual or group that the person most certainly does not want to be “hated” by (and would not “like” to be hated by).
