Long time reader and very rare poster since I come from enemy territory, where are the danged booze threads? You guys have some amazing palates and give great booze reviews and news. Not necessarily a critique by me, but there's a glut of TV and movie threads. I'm not much of a watcher of TV or movies, so although sometimes entertaining, they aren't useful to me. I get that you all are aren't here to serve only my needs, but as a minority mine have to be considered as well.

So, New Belgium and Stone products have been generously heaped upon the shelves of the alcohol purveyors. Any others coming since passage of that law? I'm back to PBR, Robert Modavi Coastal Selection Merlot, and McCormick vodka. Help a Sooner out with some new stuff that you all have been drinking.

PS, yes, a Sooner fan. I mostly exist on the politics board and the now defunct Ghetto. I promise I'm not one of those fans. I don't expect kid gloves, but at least give me a chance before you go double fisted Freddy Krueger style on my backdoor.

This weekend I tried Crazy Mountain's Lawyers Guns and Money Barleywine Style Ale. I like IPAs so it isn't completely disappointing, but this isn't anything like a barleywine style I've had before. Pretty straightforward hoppy double IPA flavor profile. Not much malt to it. I expected it to have some dark guts.

This May I'm taking a long weekend to Nashville then a leisurely drive back via Kentucky bourbon country. Booze-related recommendations? I like the historical side of things, as well as quality product.

Is this my formal invitation? Of course I'll go.

Let me know when you plan on being in bourbon country. I'll see what I can do.

Woodford Reserve is another tasty bourbon. Bulliett is good as well. It is one of the new ones. Buffalo Trace is over rated. Love 4 roses.

Going to disagree on all accounts except for 4roses which depends on the varietal.

Woodford and Bulleit are all label/bottle.

Save money on Woodford by getting Old Fo. It's pretty much the same.

And just don't buy Bulleit. It's hot garbage for young hipsters with no taste.

Go with Weller (Buffalo Trace) instead. That's what the locals do.

Jack (related to him) is what it is. Something that is best with a +1. Not a sipper.

Irish Whiskey is the way to go.

However, I am a Makers Mark Ambassador too and will go see my barrel when it comes of age.

Moderately priced bourbon: Makers or Makers 46

Premium bourbon: Blanton's. Booker's packs a wallop.

Irish: Redbreast 12 - when I first started drinking this 5-6 years ago it was a great bargain, it has skyrocketed in price since gaining popularity (approx. 40% increase). They have a new variation I'd like to try if I ever find it. I like the Jameson Caskmates, Bushmillls Bkack, and Knappogue Castle too.

Scotch: Balvenie Double Wood, Oban

Rye: High West Double Rye, Crown Royal Northern Harvest

Gin: Hendricks

Possibly my favorite bottle is: High West's The 36th Vote (so named for Utah's deciding vote in repealing prohibition) Barrel Aged Manhattan

Blantons, good call.

I started buying lagavulin 16. It's funny, because I'm normally more of a speyside guy, but this is smokey, sweet and dry with no oily mouth feel. I honestly can say this is now probably my favorite.

I am also a big Balvenie double wood guy. My store was out one time and the owner talked me into Auchentoshan three wood. It's more expensive, but really really tasty.

Been really trying lots in the last couple years. Favorites:
Glenmorangie nectar d'or
Arberlour 12
Highland park 12 (seriously one of the best values in scotch to me)
Aberfeldy 12 is another great value

Holding out ... you dirty dog
Whisky tasting at the house in December .. This stuff is legit and better than any $200 bottle I have had. I think it was about $140 at Byron's. Heaven, I tell you.

Redbreast 12 is the one bottle I always keep in stock .. and as MJD said,it's a lot higher now than 5 years ago ... like 30% more but still great.

The Highland Park was OK .. not as good as I wanted it to be.
I really like most of the Balvenie stuff, especially the double woods (12 and 17) and the 21 Portwood.

Just tried a lower price point single malt that I thought was pretty good .. Glenfarclas 12 .

My next purchase will be this .. Been intrigued to try it.

Nikka Coffe Grain .. The one Nikka I had last year was very good.

Tell me more about the Auchentoshan. Any smokiness? How does it compare to the Balvenie Double Wood?

Not at all. Takes a ton of character from its three casks - bourbon oak followed by a sherry cask and finished in another different sherry cask. Fruity, toffee, dark chocolate. One of the smoothest scotches you will have, because it's triple distilled. I think it's the only one. If you like double wood, you'll like this a lot.

They make another called valinche, which I can't find in oklahoma, that are on several Best Buy lists.

Sounds like a near term buy. Thanks. Probably try to grab it the next time I make a trip to Total Wine n Dallas.

The glenmorangie varietals are all really good. As you know I really like the Quinta Rubin as a lower cost excellent single malt.

I thought the highland park might be a bit peaty for you. I don't know if my palate is changing, since I quit regularly dipping snuff, or if I have just been more open minded, but I'm really starting to love some of the peated scotches. Still can't do the ardbeg.

Thanks for spurring this convo, medic. Glad I checked the board
