I started working at a Texaco in the summers before my 8th and 9th grade years. So this would have been summer of 1973. Was paid minimum wage plus 20% commission on everything I sold. I learned to turn a wrench at a really young age because I helped my brother who was 5 years older then me build up a 57 Chevy. I did oil changes, replaced belts, hoses, thermostats, filters, bulbs, batteries, tires, etc...light mechanic work. I still change my own oil to this day.
Worked at the Texaco at 39th and Penn in OKC. We were the highest volume Texaco in OKC and the model station at the time. We were old school full service, washed all windows, checked tires, checked oil. We sold Oil on the drive for $2.25 a quart and by the time I stopped working their we sold it for $2.75, I was shocked people would pay that but they did for the service. We did a ton of oil changes.
Worked their thru high school when not playing sports.
In high school I opened and closed the station by myself in Sundays.
We gave such excellent service each of us had our own clientele. By my sophomore, junior, and senior years in high school I was making $1,300 to $1,500 a month just on Commission. I had the baddest @ss car stereo in high school. Pissed off too much money on going to concerts and partying.
Every walk of life came thru that Station, best job I could of had to learn how to deal with different people. Unreal some of the things that happened while I worked there from customers. Owner of that Station was like a second father to me.
