I don't think individuals have a major issue with the use of this firm by the DNC. Its the hypocritical nature of the media: A) Highlighting Trump's use of any and all sources off Opp research as potential election tampering (I can show you a number of articles that stated that it 'might' be illegal and that impeachment might be viable) and B) the fact that this research has been treated by the media previously as a salacious document that was formulated by intelligence agencies rather than an opp research document with the credibility of a lung cancer study funded by Phillip Morris, and C) clearly demonstrating that they corroborate their stories through the DNC or its cronies prior to publishing (as shown by the recent tweets from the NYT writers who chose to not publish this story a year ago).

I'd also note, that this dossier is the source of the vast majority of the 'Russia' collusion stories. Given its new found credibility issues (which are compunded by the DNC's initial lack of ownership), it just furthers the perception that "Russia, Russia, Russia" is nothing more than prattle. If the document were legit, why would the DNC deny their involvement in its discovery. Why not call it opp research and just move on. But you and I know that anyone with a brain would have immediately questioned the credibility of that type of 'public' document and "Russia, Russia, Russia" would have died on the vine before the inauguration.
