'Game of Thrones' boss says TV show will spoil the ending to the books

If you're a fan of the "Game of Thrones" book series, it looks like you might have to stop watching HBO's adaptation unless you want the story's big ending spoiled.

As it turns out, the network doesn't have time to let author George R. R. Martin write the books before shooting the show, so they're going to have to forge ahead before the writer has penned the last of his massive tomes.

Speaking to an audience at Oxford University, a "Game of Thrones" executive producer said that the show will not only wrap up before all the books are released but, with guidance from Martin, the show will also end the same way.

"We know where things are heading," said "GoT" executive producer David Benioff. "We will eventually meet up at pretty much the same place that George is going. There might be some deviations along the route, but we're heading toward the same destination."

While this is good news for the fans who haven't had the time to read the five books printed thus far, which come in at a staggering 4,228 pages total, fans of both the books and television show are going to be at a loss, and are likely going to have to choose which to stick with if they don't want to spoil the books they've invested so much time in.

Martin, who published the first book in 1996, is currently working on the sixth novel in the series, which will be followed by the seventh and final installment at some presumably distant point in the future.

"I wish there were some things we didn't have to spoil," Benioff admitted. "We are kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place… We were hoping the books would come out ahead of the show, but at the same time, George has his process, and if it takes him 20 years to finish the series, that's what it should take him."

That being said, Benioff was quick to point out that the books and the show have veered apart in certain aspects before, and so there's a chance the books could still provide many surprises for readers, independent of what happens on the show.

Season five of "Game of Thrones" begins April 12 on HBO.

Why should they wait for Martin to release his books? I am sure they have compensated him nicely to continue it....

Surely this will effect book sales a little, but plenty of information will be left out. I will still get all the details of the book(s) from my fiance, she's a huge reader, whereas, I am not.

Personally I was never able to get through book #1 in the series but if I'd read all the books and the series ends before I'm done I'd still read the books. It's like Harry Potter, there are tons of folks that have seen the movies but never read the books and although the endings are pretty similar there's still quite a bit of difference between the books and movies that it's really worth reading the books. I would imagine this would work the same way.

It is going to be tough to decide whether or not to stay away from the show after this season.

However, I worry about a couple of things associated with the idea of waiting for Book 7.

First, once HBO beats him to the punch, I could see Martin totally losing interest and taking more than 5 years between books 6 and 7 (or not finishing at all).

Secondly, I could also see him making some significant changes in order to make the book ending differ from the show ending. Those changes could easily detract from the finished product.

I will still read the books because there are tons of characters in the books left out of the show. Also there are enough differences between the two to keep my interest. I just won't be in such a hurry to read through them though knowing the end.

I don't think you have to worry too much about the next book. I suspect that we will see a bit of the Book 6 content in GOT this season, but most of it won't be revealed. I, also, expect Book 6 to be released within the next year, which means it will be out before the next season of GOT. The problem will be with Book 7. GOT will, likely, finish its run 2-4 years before Book 7 is released, so that is the book that will be spoiled by the show.

I don't really give a damn what Martin wants.

I want the book first though.

I think those of us that picked up #1 in 1996 might have a different opinion on this than those that picked it up because they liked the show.

This video has always just been funny to me, but today it kind of suns up my mood in the whole "show will finish first" debacle...

Rage of Thrones

I have mad respect for all you who started the books in 1996. I think if I had started it then I would be upset about this.

Been ya I meant I wouldn't be as excited to read book 7 as I was for Book 6 or the previous ones.

Just say thanks that HBO didn't pick this show up 7 years ago or earlier.

That's not 100%. HBO executives still want the show to run ten season while the show runners want to wrap it up in seven. Seven would be 2017 which still gives Martin two more years. If he got motivated he could release the last book in time. That's a big if. Ten would push it all the way to 2020. Even Martin should be able to make that deadline although I worry that they are going to throw a lot of filler in to stretch it and they would really need the final book for the last two seasons.

Same here. I don't feel like I ever have time to sit down for a few hours uninterrupted to read a book, let alone a long series anymore. I hate that because it was a huge part of my youth.

Even if they make it last 10 seasons, they would have to get into Book 7 content in season 9.

Also, I don't see GRRM busting ass to finish book 7 quicker than any of the last few books.

My prediction last year of three remaining seasons may play out. That means this one and two more. I heard on one of the entertainment shows today that "characterS" who do not die in the books thus far will die this season.

Peter Dinklage then said that when he receives the season's scripts, he always goes to the last one to see if he's in it. "I cut to the chase, first," he said. He's apparently got one more full season in front of him. I'm happy about that, because when Tyrion leaves, so do I.

Even Dani is not the compelling character I once thought she was. I expect to see her as the final episodes unfold, I just don't care about her as I once did.

I'm hoping Little Finger bites the dust and that Sansa has something to do with it. She will only be doing what he taught her.

In Stannis' camp, Ser Davos and Melisandre are the only interesting characters. I feel Davos' character has been far more thoroughly developed than Stannis'.

Choosing between Tyrion and Jon will be a toss-up. I think Lannister will redeem his obvious flaws of drinking and whoring this season while Snow doesn't really have any character faults. Of course, being a "good guy" guarantees nothing.

Well... He is a bastard.

Agree on Dani. I think she goes from one of the most compelling characters in the first three books to pretty lame in books four and five. Part of that is probably be design. Her growth curve from "sold to savages" to "conqueror of the slave cities" was really fast with little room for stuff that didn't in love bloodshed after Drogo's death. I think they should end this season on the show where book five ended with her... I have hope again after that last scene in the book.

Davos is more interestin than Stannis in the books too. Far more interesting.

For those of you that have been readig the books... Interesting irony between Davos and Melisandre. Both competing so hard over Stannis' soul... Both mostly oblivious to what really matters despite it being shoved in front of them. Which one figures it out first?

Last week, I was listening to a pod cast roundtable discussion by 4 ASOIAF "experts"... they were all asked who their favorite and least favorite POV character is from the books.

For those that haven't read them, each chapter is written from the point of view of one of the characters. Some of the main show characters (like Stannis, Littlefinger, and others) do not have POV chapters but are only seen through someone else's eyes.

3 of the 4 "experts" chose Davos as their favorite POV character and Dani as their least favorite. They basically all said that Davos is one of few really good people, in the books, and what he goes through is always very interesting. They basically agreed that Dani's storyline is boring and seems superfluous.

I agree on both counts, but especially on Dani. Why do we care what happens to Yunkai/Mereen? This is a story about Westeros and we all know that she is going to end up back there before the story ends. Stop dicking around in the slave cities and get your very nice ass back to the other side of the Narrow Sea.

I'm surprised by that. Bran is by far the worst POV character in my opinion. I was so happy there were only three of his chapters in A Dance With Dragons, and the news that he apparently won't appear in this season of the show either.

I think Coldhands makes the Bran chapters interesting. Still trying to figure out what the story is on him. But, I do agree that his chapters became less interesting once he got to the 3 eyed crow. I would probably agree with you if the number of Bran chapters in ADWD had been interchanged with the number of Dani chapters.

I actually kind of like the Bran chapters because there's just weirdness associated with him. I don't really know exactly what's going on with him, but it seems like he will be there to the end in some form or other. Other than the dragons and ice zombies (which don't actually show up in the books that often), his parts are some of the few that are discernibly "fantasy." And like BJ said, he doesn't overstay his welcome in the books because his chapters are relatively few and far between. For those who don't like him, he's not even supposed to be in this season of the show.

My theory is that his place, in the endgame, is basically as a telephone system that allows the different parties to know what is going on in the different parts of Westeros, and respond to threats faster. His power to see through the eyes of all of the Weirwood trees has already manifested itself and there have been hints that he was able to actually speak to the Eddard of the past when he was under the tree in Winterfell. Plus, he should be able to warg into Ravens and talk to people that way.
