I think that’s a universal political trait. Look at the Republican reaction to Liz Cheney, for example. Politics is a game that demands team loyalty. Any deviation gets you blackballed.
There's a little difference in those two examples you're equating there. Joe Manchin at least temporarily stopped a multi trillion dollar spend of wasted money by the US government. Liz Cheney is scum of the earth and I am not a Republican myself and nor a Democrat but to be equate those two I feel likeThey are not even close to equal examples.

My problem with John McCain is twofold. One he was a corrupt POS, two his overly dramatic thumbs down on killing Obamacare. I have no problem with him not voting to kill Obamacare, I have a problem with him acting like a drama queen. Just make your vote like everyone else and go on.
Lix Cheney? Hopefully Wyoming votes her ass out of office. A politician's job is to represent the people that voted her into office and follow the law. Voting for Trump's impeachment was all about a personal vendetta, not the law. She is a swamp creature and needs to go along with most Democrats and several other Republicans if we truly want a representative government.
I don’t dispute the difference, but the difference is not germane to the point that in party politics one either plays ball or gets vilified mercilessly. For my part I’m glad Manchin defied his party and totally disagree with what Cheney is doing. But for whatever reason she has, Cheney clearly believes she’s in the right. And the Republican Party is going scorched earth on her. They view her as a traitor, just as the Democrats feel about Manchin.
And that’s the problem. She shouldn’t be doing what she thinks is right but what her constituents would want. She is representing them not her own personal interests. Which sadly is what politics has become.
I’m confident you will get the result you hope for. It’s a delicate dance a politician faces. Vote your conscience or betray it. The people of Wyoming knew that Cheney is a bloodthirsty war monger - or should have known - and voted for her anyway. I think her vendetta against Trump is 100% related to her (and the warmongers’) fear that he’ll interfere with their global plans if he gets reelected. She’s willing to sacrifice her own political career to see to it that doesn’t happen. She knows that as a swamp rat she’ll land on her feet. So she defies the Republican stance on Trump. And gets excoriated for it. It’s a tradeoff she’s more than willing to take. Which brings me back to the original point. The Republican Party (at least the Trump contingent) is no different from the Democrat Party in the regard that you either have undying loyalty or you’ll be tossed in the trash with yesterday’s newspaper.
I can't speak for others, but I have no problem with Republicans breaking rank when voting for legislation. My problem is when Republicans join with Democrats in political witch hunts.

I don’t think I agree with you, at least not in the way you worded it. I think it is up to the politician while running for office to tell the electorate what are his or her uncompromising principles, things for which he will never betray his or her conscience. No two people ever agree 100% of the time on what is the right thing to do. A voter needs to know which issues he is in agreement and which he is not, and vote for the politician that most closely reflects his thinking, fully understanding that other constituents think otherwise. If an officeholder has made it clear where he/she stands and is voted into office then an argument can be made that his vote reflects the will of those whom he represents. The problem as I see it is politicians by nature are habitual liars, so no one can trust what any of them say. Of course none of what I just said is relevant to the OP.
I’m not sure I agree with that. I think when someone runs for office, they should share with the people their beliefs and what they support or what they are against. Then, if the majority of voters agree with those beliefs, they vote for that person.
If I ever ran for office and won, I‘m voting in Congress based on what I feel is right. If my constituents voted me in, it was because my beliefs were the same as theirs, not because I’m going to do the will of the constituents. After all, you’ll be representing people with all kinds of beliefs. Like Ricky Nelson sang, “You can’t please everyone, so you’ve got to please yourself.”

There was no insurrection or coup. A few people trespassed and even fewer engaged in vandalism. If a true insurrection had taken place then ~300 lampposts would have been decorated that afternoon. Or Jefferson's tree of liberty may have been watered.
