Trump is kind of a bitch on this topic. However, so are the athletes who want the platform to make an anti-Trump political statement.

I think you just described why the action makes him not a bitch.
Rescinding (or never extending) the invitation seems the closest to keeping one's house in order option that the players and organizations have left on the table (for him to choose).
Lot of nothing, as is desirable.

What's the news here? True winners want nothing to do with Biff. They didn't inherit their fortunes, they got them with their own talents. No reason to water down a world championship by letting Biff sponge off their success. He'd only use the occasion to promote himself. I'm proud of the Eagles and Warriors -- ya'll enjoy insight into the minds of winners, they don't put up with Biff.

I'd like to back KD out of my analysis.
He's probaby on twitter right now under an alt account defending his decision not to attend.
KD is the perfect example of why people famous because of a skill set (athletics, acting, etc) may not be the most rational people when it comes to any other subject.
Call that the KD Principle. This particular example of the KD Principle isn't even all that extreme, particularly if you apply that KD Principle to politics. A guy can be an absolute savant at one thing and a drooling ape at others. The savant/ape thing isn't symmetrical, either.
Plug the KD Principle into politics and... joila. Ever KD in the country gets a vote -- everybody. Democracy is such a shitty form of government, it boils down to mass psychology. I can't think of a better option than a democratic republic, but still...
Unless your business IS politics, keep politics out of your business.
