Dustin and Luke have always been two of my favorite wrestlers (along with Steven Schmidt). Luke obviously fell short of expectations this year and while Dusten had a great year, his final match was a little disappointing, IMO.

I’ve had a spread sheet that I made probably in the late 80’s and when I put in our wrestler’s NCAA data, stuff pops up in the way of milestones and records. That being said I wanted to point out a couple of unfortunate records they’ve set and hopefully it’s been long enough since the NCAA’s that I won’t get lambasted for pointing it out.

Dustin’s record is, a little good, a little bad:
Prefaced with; Kirk Mammen (1989-1992) was a member of 2 national championship and 2 runner-up teams and contributed to those finishes by being our fourth 4x AA (6,6,5,8). Those finishes gave him the OSU all-time record for NCAA losses with 11 (3,3,2,3).

Dustin has become or 15th 4x AA but a 5x participant (-,6,6,2,4). In those NCAA’s he has incurred 12 losses (2,3,3,2,2) which is now the most in school history. If you count only those from his AA years it’s just 10.

As I said; good and bad; 4x AA good, 12 losses bad.

Luke’s record is mostly bad;
Prefaced with; Our first three 4x NCAA participants were Dick Hutton (47-50: 1,1,2,1) and then Jay Arneson (69-72: -,6,2,4). They were followed by Rick Jones from 72 thru 75 who was 0 for 4 at the NCAA’s. Since Rick Jones we have had 55 additional 4x participants with all achieving AA status at least once… until Luke did it again. There have been only six who have gone 1 for 4.

As I said before, I’ve really enjoyed watching Dustin and Luke wrestle and these negatives were inflated by things beyond their control (Surber injuries, Dustin competition and an extra year). Anyway, I hope they both hang around and help the program.

I’m sure that some here will deride my bringing these up so I will give a preemptive response to that with one of my favorite quotes which has been used a lot lately; “Statistics don’t care about your feelings”

Additional statistic:
Dean and Wyatt were our 10th and 11th single season champions with only one season (as a cowboy), that is 1 for 1. Three of the 11 were in ’28 (1st NCAA) and one was ’29. AJ was our 9th.
