Trump vows to close the Dept of Education

Dept of Education, to be fair, has been ass since inception. While I think there should be some over-arching guidance and governance on education at a national level, this ain't it. States can drive, sure, but even that can have its failures with how dramatic the differences are across states.

How many here believe he’ll actually take the necessary steps? I can’t decide whether Trump or Harris sling more mud against the wall seeing how many votes it will attract.

The bloat in these departments is insane and inefficient

Centralization of the government is against everything our Constitution stands for and our Founding Fathers envisioned.

Let’s pay the teachers and not a million bureaucrats and administrators!

As a professional tourist for 12 years I quizzed educators in 47 states. I often asked can you teach me to count US currency? "Yes" was always the answer.

Then I wrote .99 cents on a piece of paper and asked, "how much?" 99% of the time was 99 cents." With my thumb I would cover the dot, "This is 99 cents. I wrote .99 cents which is 99/100ths of one penny. In 1792 congress made the buck the world's first decimal/metric currency. We don't teach the structure and history of the US buck. I could go on and on and on.

The Dept. of Education needs to go.

If Trump wins the election (and for the record I hope he beats Harris) what are the odds he succeeds in closing down the DOE? What are the odds he even tries? What are the odds he’ll tell us he tried really hard but those bastards got in his way? What are the odds his promise is a scam? I remember Bill Clinton telling us about one week into his administration that he’d never worked so hard on anything as he had worked to “give” us a middle class tax cut, but he just couldn’t do it. And I don’t think he ever brought it up again. What are the odds Trump is scamming us just like Bill Clinton did?

And the main way they hide the kickbacks to the politicians that push for the massive payouts to these depts.

Trump will continue to rein all that inefficiency in. That's why politicians on BOTH sides attacked him, he was attempting to stop their gravy train,
How is Trump going to rein in all the inefficiency? What's his plan? Has he published it? Or are you simply taking him at his (very unreliable) word?

Has any other Presidential candidate in recent memory set a goal of shutting down the DOE? IMO that is a step in the right direction and one in the opposite direction of the left.
Just like Trump saying he could end the Ukraine War on day one. Yes it's obviously a little bit of hyperbole but it's a far different message than what we hear from Democrats and the swamp rat Republicans.

If you were on X (twitter) you would know. He has talked doubt it. Vance has talked about it. RFK, Jr. has talked about it. Musk has offered to head up a Government efficiency program... And Vivek has offered his ideas as well. Hopefully if Trump/Vance wins RFKjr, Musk and Vivek are all closely associated with the administration or actually in it in some manner. These guys are all big thinkers and achievers.....and they all want to dismantle the deep state..... from the DOE, CIA, FBI, DOJ, FDA, etc...... Which is just what we need..

But just like Trump's first term....without the support of the House and the Senate it is a very hard task to take on. In other words, in 2016 Trump won and the repubs won the house but Speaker Ryan fought against Trumps agenda in almost every way. Had Ryan supported and pushed the Trump agenda, like most Speakers of the winning party do, the wall would have been built, etc. That is one of the reasons the house was lost at the midterms.

So this is the problem...every democrat and quite a few if not most republicans don't want someone like Trump walking in and making wholesale positive changes that help the American people. That will derail their gravy train....and they can't stand it.... Ryan was a perfect example of a politician exposed for what he really is.....a big government authoritarian hack who wasn't about to relinquish his power to an outsider. There are plenty of other examples...

We are now spending nearly a trillion dollars per year just to service the debt caused by our wonderful government. This is unsustainable and either we do something good like dismantling the deep state or something not so good is going to happen.

So Dan, quit being so jaded, and vote for and support Trump, et al and Make America Great Again!! You might start smiling again.

Thank you for your thoughtful and very reasonable reply. My only complaint about what you wrote is it only says what Trump and his associates want to do, no detail on how they plan to achieve it. It sounds like a wish list, not an actual policy. But maybe that's what I would find if I belonged to Twitter. And believe me I hope they accomplish that and much more.

One thing I think you and many others on this board tend to overlook in your anger that the legislative branch hampers Trump's policies is those legislators have been elected by the same people that elected Trump. They are representing what they think their voters want in the same way Trump and Associates think they have been. I would point out that if Trump wins with less than 50% of the vote like he did the last time, a sound argument could be made that the legislators make a stronger argument on behalf of the "majority" than does Trump.

I know I run the risk that I sound like a Democrat with this reply, much like many on this board are convinced I hate Jews because I don't support Israel's genocide. But that is not the case. I'm just trying to get you and others to understand that you don't necessarily speak on behalf of the whole country, or even the majority of the country. I want Trump to beat Harris, and I hope he's not just making empty promises in his drive to buy votes. Call me jaded if you want, maybe I am after 78 years, but I don't trust Trump's promises, and won't until he "shows me the beef."

It would be my opinion that Ryan did not follow his constituents desires at all but his desire alone (and others like him) and that desire was to keep Trump from accomplishing his (Trump’s) agenda.

Thinking the politicians are following the will of the people is where you are wrong. Most of them rarely follow the will of the people. Most people do not want war, inflation (money printing), open borders, unchecked crime, etc. And yet that is what Washington gives them.

Can Trump change that mindset?? I don’t know….but he is the only one legitimately trying.

Why do you think they are shooting at him? I don’t think a man “just seeking votes” would be willing to risk his life for those votes.

Your first paragraph I agree with 100%.

Your second paragraph is spot on, with the caveat that most people keep reelecting the politicians you and I despise. So maybe people want those things more than we want to believe. Based on comments on this board it would seem war is something most people want. Those politicians have given us inflation, open borders. unchecked crime over and over, and the voters keep sending them back to do it again. There's video of George Carlin telling us maybe it's not the politicians who suck, maybe it's the people. Maybe he has a point.

Where you and I disagree is I don't think Trump is trying to do what you think he's trying to do. I think he wants to institute a MAGA Big Brother government in place of the current leftist version. And I think that is why they're shooting at him. For me anyway, his first term showed me all I needed to see to know he's all hat and no cattle.

2 thoughts about the DOE if I were President. The first thought was to close it down but I soon realized that shuttering the DOE wouldn't solve the issues that the DOE created in the past 40 years.
The second thought is to clean house of current workers and replace them with former retired educators who understand the difficulties facing our battered education system. All teacher unions would be banned from the DOE. The people working on education would get us back to basics of fundamental learning while searching for proven, innovative ways to instruct the students who have problems with learning.
The DOE would become an suggestion center for improving education, not a policy center that rubber stamps change just to have change. Especially when all of the new changes have originated out of California.

Name the smartest of all the primates.
Since primates have walked the earth, how much of our water supply have we exhausted?

You probably would never believe the myriad of incorrect answers I received with these jewels. And I've had people actually tell me State A education is better than State Z. They're all bad.
