UK how do you know no president in 40 years has not talked to a Taiwanese President?
I think that was said when this happened, we recognized an independent Taiwan until 1980 or so, I may be wrong , but with all this I had heard somewhere that no President had spoken directly to the Taiwanese leader since then

Not really......I am not a fan of President Trump, but, I spent long enough in the military (21 years) to understand that he is our leader, I decided many decades ago that whoever is the President was my boss, didn't matter what party, and you could drive yourself crazy if you tried to politically analyze ever order he gave..........and I know, I have gotten riled up on these boards, but hey, we all have those days! I have always been neutral on Presidents , not Liberal, not conservative, I need to stay that way....bitch about the bad, heap on praise about the good!

I can agree with that. I'd just note that they are varying degrees of good and bad and be careful to not follow the media's lead to take everything to the nth degree.

i made no suggestion implicit or otherwise that you were disrespectful to the office

only that you fail to credit the man who was elected to it as a credible tactician

I'll credit the man as a credible tactician based upon his performance in the office. Have seen a whole lot of facts to support giving him credit yet. I'll also credit or discredit him as a credible tactician based upon what I have seen from him in the past 30+ years he's been in the public eye.

Everybody should be doing their own research and making their own decisions and evaluations instead of following a party line or engaging in group think.

Both supporters and critics of Trump.

I don't know about all that but it appears he questioned the policy, evaluated it, talked to both sides, decided to stick with the one China policy.
That's something typically done BEFORE committing publicly to a position. Order of operations is significant - in mathematics and politics. Kinda sad that the new GOP Administration is learning that on the fly.

So we took a minor level blunder (eh?) and immediately ratcheted the rhetoric, implications, and magnitude to an 11.
You get we are talking about the most powerful political position on the planet and not the taping of an episode The Apprentice right? There are going to be precious few opportunities for someone to yell "Cut" and reshoot a scene when the Republican Administration blunders.

Why would you expect trump to do what's typically been done before?

Relax and have another growler. He talked to the leader of Taiwan. It's not like he pissed all over Great Britain by returning the Churchill bust or something.

I'm sure there will be plenty of other meaningless unconventional moves to follow that will remind the world that there's a new sheriff in town, to the horror of readers of the New Yorker magazine. I can't wait to see what happens the next time Iran sends out a couple of speed boats to harass one of our naval ships in international waters, for example. Pretty sure it's not going to involve having our Secretary of State grovel in thankfulness to them.

He probably place them on double secret "notice".

Remarkable. Donald trump is not allowed to learn on the fly. He should just be a routine cuck like all the other lifers. That's quite a standard for someone who doesn't hold his leaders accountable for destroying the earth one private jet jaunt at a time while preaching the sky is falling due to global warming cooling warming change. Pathetically partisan and predictable.

The bits he is screwing up are the easier bits... you get those bits by just paying attention.

Says who? A liberal? That's no longer a reliable barometer. You guys bitch and moan and bitch and moan and protest and riot way too much. Call it over saturation or progressive bullshit fatigue. When the party of #bathrooms can't bother to celebrate a victory like withdrawing from the TPP, it's clear you're all in on delusion and paranoia. Throw some Xanax in that Pinot. Your heart will thank you.

A President cannot learn on the fly, at least in certain areas.........the entire world listens and reacts to every word a US President says and everything he does, that is why IMO twitter can be very dangerous, by the time his tweets are clarified , it may be to late...........

You won't be saying that when something like this causes a major incident

I'm trying to think of a previous occasion where some little thing caused a major international incident. Honestly, I can't recall such an occasion. Can you?

I probably should not say this but.........over the last 30 years there have been several occasions where the US and Russia came very close to war, every one of the instances was caused at least in part by a misunderstanding, or a collection of them...........

I interpret this to mean that you can't think of such an occasion, either.

This post needs sinister movie music.

I am sure they still are. I have been out of the loop for a few years, but they were

OK. Let's review. You are fearful that some little thing done by President Rookie could cause a major international incident. I ask you to cite one example in the thousands of years of recorded human history where a similar incident has occurred. You say it's happened, but you can't talk about it.

Wouldn't we all know about it because it was a MAJOR INTERNATIONAL INCIDENT? Seriously?

You saying that we have come close several times only proves my thesis. "Close to causing" isn't the same as "has caused". Just because I can't think of such an occasion doesn't mean it hasn't happened. I'm genuinely open to learning, but having a conversation with you has been nothing but frustrating up to this point.

Interesting defense of incompetence- "he can't do too much damage can he?"

You give your kids trophies for 5th place growing up?
