This is just fing insane

One question, Sys, you asked where I would like to erect the statue of the person that stole my child and sold them into slavery? Well I probably wouldn't want to erect one for that person but hundreds of years later honestly I wouldn't care what they did. As a Native American I'm not a huge fan of General Custer but I really don't care that there's a statue of him. It's history, it's not what our country is about nor is slavery an issue in our country. I also don't care about the Cleveland Indians or Washington Redskins or the Florida State Seminoles. Some folks just wake up needing something to worry about, doesn't matter your race, there are just some folks that need to worry about something. Those statues cause no harm, they aren't real. It's not Night at the Museum where they come to life at night.

Heck, there should be a statue for Lee, not because of his role in the Civil War but because he was so dang smart and pretty much predicted this. We spend way too much time in this country worrying about things that don't matter.

I agree with all that. So why is taking them down such a big deal then? What's so offensive about removing them?

Never forget:

There's a difference between mocking / shaming / attempting to discredit an individual (personalized attacks) --

Never forget.

-There's a difference between posting internet memes, patently false information, opinions, and loaded questions, shadowy implications instead of actual facts, and "multiple sources" that are all secondary and originating from your echo chamber of choice, and

-Providing factually accurate information actually validated by data and original source information.

Why do they need to be taken down? I get it in the case of something that's actually offensive, like a statue depicting a lynching or something, but we read about these folks in history books. Should we also remove them from the books as well? Who is the established authority on what's offensive? Is there a minimum threshold on the number of people being offended that has to be met? One person? 5 people? 1,500? What if only one person out of 30,000 finds a statue offensive?

I don't think someone is advocating re-writing history. I don't see statues of Bendict Arnold, Pol Pot, Hitler, the Rosenbergs, etc. but they're still in history books.

Who is the established authority on what's offensive?

It depends on the entity that is hosting the statue. IN the case of Duke, it would be President Price. In the case of a town, the mayor or governing body. Basically the same authority that erected them in the 1900's?

Is there a minimum threshold on the number of people being offended that has to be met?

Again, wouldn't it depend on what the entity decides that is housing the statue? I mean, someone at Duke ok'd the statue, surely someone at Duke can authorize taking it down. Duke is a private school, why can't they take down or put up whatever it wants?

Well, those two folks are a wee bit different than Robert E Lee.

Thanks for the response though. Very reasonable.

I think that was his point. The were infinitely worse, but haven't been removed from any history books. Pretty sure R. E. Lee has a very safe place in those books.
