They should just respond that the emails were kept on a private server in her basement and that her team reviewed them all and found none with those words. Then let them know that most of the emails were about yoga routines and wedding planning and that they've all been deleted. That should satisfy the NY Times.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here a bit.
First off, this very well might be business as usual. In theory, they won't find anything of interest, and nothing will come of their inquiry. If so, none of us might have known the inquiry occurred, except that some Trump supporter found out about it and went public with it.
Second, it is entirely possible that this is not business as usual, and wasn't an overarching m.o. sent down from the highest levels of the NYT. It could be just one Trump hater (NYT employee) who was in position to make the request and did it unilaterally.
With social media being what it is today, and the country being as divided as it is today, it is hard to know how outside the norm this is, or whether or not this was done due to corporate mandate or the work of one or two individuals.
Been the problem with your assumption(s) are that the NYT has not diligently researched (or asked for dirt on) the spouses of prominent democratic/liberal people. Starting with the target rich environment of the Clintons (both).

Agreed. If the same standard is applied each and every time such nominations occur. But a press that only digs against one side is a biased pressed that does a disservice to all Americans. So as was posted, the simple question here is did they submit a public records request when Sotomeyer or Kagan were nominated? If not, then yes, they are free, and yes they are biased and their opinion becomes as worthless as the paper its written on.
