Teague Travis

I just looked up what is looked at for selecting the at large bids. Six spots were allocated, and is down to four, but performance at the conference tournament is factored in. The teams RPI is also factored in. He definitely has some decent wins, just not this year, but finished R16 last year at 157. Wonder if past year results weigh in on the decision at all? If he is healthy and is not too rusty, I think he can win this bracket. That would be the best way to get into Nationals, or he can just finish in the Top 4. haha

  • Selection Criteria:
The NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee uses several factors to determine at-large qualifiers, including:
    • Head-to-head competition: Results against wrestlers who have already qualified.

    • Quality wins: Wins against highly ranked opponents.

    • Results against common opponents: Head-to-head results against wrestlers who wrestled the same opponents.

    • Winning percentage: Overall win percentage during the regular season.

    • Ratings Percentage Index (RPI): A ranking system that measures a team's strength of schedule.

    • Coaches' Ranking: Rankings compiled by coaches in the wrestling community.

    • Conference tournament finish: Performance at the conference tournament, even if it didn't result in automatic qualification.
There are some errors in that criteria. For example, it is not the team's RPI, it is the individual wrestler's RPI that matters.

This doc contains the correct criteria starting on page 7

If he comes in fifth or lower he will not meet the criteria for at-large as he wont have enough matches to qualify for a win %, RPI, or coaches' rank.

If Teague beats Carter in the room this week and you feel there is more upside with him I don’t see the problem. Doesn’t have to be huge upside you see or expect.

Carter isn’t scoring points in a few weeks. Teague might or at least the staff thinks he might. Neither will put up many.
Carter beat Teague recently in a wrestle-off.

The staff has expectations. You wrestle offensive/to score and take chances, or you'll sit if there's someone in the wings who will.

Only problem is we don't know if Teague will. We don't know much about what he is currently capable of especially with a big cut after being injured all year. I'm hopeful he will do well. The fact that Carter beat him in a wrestle off means that Carter was really having some struggles and the coaches couldn't get through to him so they had to move on. Because with how poorly Carter has been wrestling and to still beat Teague doesn't make me feel any better.

“We” don’t know anything.
Coaches do, Teague may fall flat on his face but Carter hasn’t been able to finish.
Trust the coaches. Getting to Philadelphia doesn’t get us any points. Coaches think Teague gives us the best chance to score team points. We will find out soon.
I’m excited to see what he can do.

I mainly agree but to score at NCAAs you have to make NCAAs and by removing Carter you remove a bid. Throw in ASU losing their bid and it go a whole lot tougher to qualify at 149.

I trust the coaches 100% to make this move. I would just hope there is some decent separation between Carter/Teague. Maybe I'm wrong and it is just a "gut" coin flip. Scary to lose a spot though if it is that close.

If I had to bet my guess is the coaches didn’t know that the Arizona State kid wasn’t going to go and they were banking on Teague being top five. But at the end of the day, if you can’t get an automatic spot in the conference tournament, what are you gonna do in the dance?

I think the opposite.

I think they knew and were not confident Carter could get 5th?

I agree. Trust the coaches. Even when you disagree,

I have learned to trust those closest to the process, even if I might disagree up front. I have been proved wrong enough to realize that I need to trust those closest to the situation. Many times over. You'll get there. haha
I was just kidding, it was a joke. haha Penn State fans take everything so seriously! haha Kidding again! How many champs does PSU walk away with this weekend?

For all we know, Carter could have removed himself.
