Teague Travis

Anyone know why Travis is wrestling at the Big 12s? Did he beat out Carter or is Carter hurt?

Also, someone remind me I thought he was injured and done for the year? I assume he’s going to burn up a year just to wrestle in postseason?

Was supposed to be out for the year. But got healthy. Won a wrestle-off.

Guys want to wrestle. Med-shirt and redshirt is more loved by fans than the wrestlers. They're all ultimate competitors.

Did you hear any details of the wrestle off? Was it close?

I'll share what I know. Up until this change up Carter had full intentions of coming back next year. I do not know now. Carter won the wrestle off the week of the Iowa dual. I have no knowledge of a second wrestle off and my best guess is this was purely a coaches decision based on performance.

My heart goes out to Carter, great young man, great family. That being said I think this points to how DT and Co will approach things going forward. Wrestle hard, improve and compete Every. Single. Match. or you might lose your spot.

So if Travis finishes outside of the top 4, and doesn't automatically qualify for the NCAAs, will Carter Young be eligible for one of the NCAA tournament spots that are saved for ranked guys who underperform in their conference tournament? 🤔

I would imagine you’d have to actually perform at your conference tournament.

Top 6

Only top 4 at 149 automatically qualify. Since Carter is not competing, the conference loses the spot. And to make matters worse, the ASU 149 lber who qualified a spot is also out so we’re down to 4 spots instead of 6.

IMO, this is a big risk. If Carter places outside the top 5 or 6, he likely gets an at-large bid. Don’t think that will be the case for Teague if he places outside the top 4.

I am pretty sure the Big 12 allocated 6 spots? Not saying you are wrong, but I thought that meant we sent the top 6 from the tourney?

Looking at the brackets, Teague will either have to beat Paniro (semis) to make the finals or Mcdougald at least once on the backside to make the consi finals (3rd/4th). Doable but he has to be ready for the speed of both when they finally shoot.

I will say most of the wording says "the conference was awarded the AQ spot based on the wrestlers performance" so maybe once it's been awarded it's locked in? Hopeful

I think losing Qualified spots puts more at large bids out. My gut feeling is 6 Big 12 wrestlers will go at 149. I could be wrong about that.

This is the first decision the staff has made that’ll either leave us going “Wow that was a stroke of brilliance!” Or “Did these guys have a stroke?”
Rin Sakamoto going against the #1 guy on the road in Carver for his first-ever folkstyle match was the first shocking decision of the DT era. I liked it when it happened and I still think it was a good decision.

Teague going in place of Carter in the postseason, coming off a long layoff from injury and down a weight is even more shocking. I don't have an opinion on this one, but I sure hope it works out!

I’m also slightly concerned with my “blind belief” that these are the right choices but I’m running with.

The 6 that earned the spot for the conference have to wrestle in the conference tournament - if anyone doesn't the conference looses the spot. This was the issue a few years ago when Chandler Rogers qualified and didn't wrestle. Joe Smith placed high enough to get to NCAA, but that pushed someone out that would have qualified if Chandler wrestled.

Gotcha

This deal is much different but very similar.

Surgical answer. You've taken a very hands on approach to this question. I couldn't put my finger on it at first but you've pointed me in the right direction. And thats no Bull..............Durham
