Syskatine not a lawyer

@syskatine , I can honestly say that over the last several days on this board, I've grown to appreciate you a little. Not a lot. But a bit. And that's better than nothing.

But if you use "esquire" on your stationary, I will eat your soul.

I don't understand that. I've been spanking your leotard-wearin' ass for years and holding the fort against hordes of conservatives for years. Why now?

"Esq." is for first year lawyers and Tulsa attorneys that wear tortoise-shell glasses and dress vests.

Let's say... you set a good example for how to take a beating without getting yourself on the terrorist watch list.

Isn't the rule that you shouldn't self apply esquire? I thought it was used, sort of like denoting someone is a doctor.

For once, you thirst for constructive knowledge and those are good questions.

You won't find this is in a book, or watching fox news, or listening to those booger-eatin' republicans. This explanation of the distinction between lawyers and attorneys is as follows:

Lawyers: They represent people or businesses in lawsuits. They get results. They are on someone's side. They have balls (even the females) and stand on both feet and argue cases. They eat what they kill. Some children want to be lawyers when they grow up. They have earned the enmity of millions of people because they serve in an adversarial, representative capacity.

Attorneys: Attorneys have narrow eyes, pour over spreadsheets and attend meetings. They are glorified accountants. They do not stand on both feet and represent people or businesses. They draft briefs and are typically (not always -- this is a dangerous one) stable fed, i.e. salaried. No child wants to grow up and be an attorney, except for Brad. They aren't hated, because it's like hating an inventory control accountant, there's nothing to hate.

Thanks for answering syskatine. The answer even had some entertainment value.

@CowboyJD, are you a lawyer or attorney?

Lawyer....from the beginning, now, and forever.

I have baby attorneys as assistant counsel learning at my feet in the hopes of one day becoming a lawyer, stab me in the back, and take my place.

Honestly...based on sys's definition, I'm basically 80/20 lawyer to attorney....I do go to a boatload of meetings, but most of them are pretty damned adversarial in nature.

Right on. Thanks for the info. I don't know what kind of attorneying syskatine does but vaguely recall you saying you work for a law enforcement agency? Am I remembering that correctly?

Yeah. Head Of the Legal Division for a stateside law enforcement agency here in Oklahoma. Which one is kind of an open secret known by most. DM me if you're really interested all that much.

All my statements and actions here are mine and mine alone. They are not representative of the views or opinions of my employer. :D

Started in criminal defense and plaintiff's civil rights. Did that from 91-99. Married my wife in 97. She's a cop. Took a pay cut to go to the other side (most go the other way...get experience with DA, go out on their own) because I like having sex with my wife and because cross examining her fellow officers that I had been drinking with on the weekend just got too weird.

Oh I'm certain you've gone the other way.

JD is a renaissance man, wrapped in a singlet, surrounded by a bearskin coat (which he killed and skinned with his bare hands)

I know JD. I've been around for some time. Just making sure I'm not as senile as my wife thinks. I appreciate what you do.

Well, hell...since this thread popped back up, it’s as good a place and time as any to announce I’m changing jobs.

Gonna be a 100% lawyer in court pretty much all day every day prosecuting and getting convictions directly.

Two month vacation before I become part and parcel of the allegedly racist criminal justice system. No more state contract reviews. No more employment law. No more civil defense work.

I guess I need to binge as many episodes of “Law and Order” as I can find in the interim.

Not my choice. New political appointee to head of my agency decided to bring in his District Attorney buddy that announced he wasn’t running for re-election about the same time of the change in leadership at my agency.

It is what it is when it comes to politics.

But still...yeah...still congratulations. Gonna use some savings/earnings generated by state deferred comp program to get debt free, new pay is about the same, and I’m looking forward to letting loose the dogs of war and wreaking havoc.:D

Hated getting “good ole boy”ed after 20 years and 4 prior Directors, but....

Looking forward to the new work....gonna be lots of fun.

This vacation may drive me nuts, though. I’m already bored.

Look forward to seeing you around here a little more frequently, for the next 2 months anyway.

I really sympathize with you. I have around 28,000 largely irrelevant documents I got this week if you'd like to get your feet wet again and start scrolling through...

Not my days of being an “attorney” are done....I’m all about being handed the file in the morning and trying the case in the afternoon now.:D

Don’t go getting a big ole head after I say the following but you are going to make one heck of a prosecutor. Without understanding the width and depth of your OSBI position, you now have the opportunity to make a big difference, to the guilty and not guilty.

What he said, JD. Oh and sys is a lawyer? Does he bill clients for the 18 hours a day he spends on this board?
