Some Black Americans Are Seeing the Light

No it is not encouraging, it is sad. The republicans offer nothing of substance to help black people. It is great that they are seeing the wolves in sheep's clothing but for these stagnate communities there isn't anything for them to latch onto politically. Free market? Why would the invisible hand build anything in the cesspool neighborhoods that the democrats have created?

The republicans need to start up the WPA (yes government spending!) and figure out who in this country really does want to work for a wage. Who really wants to get experience and take their skills to the private sector regardless of race. There are people in this country who want to live off the government but it is a sin to assume these communities are all like that.

I would over the course of the next twelve months make food stamps only good for fruits, veggies, meats and whole grains.

Send a bus to poor communities to gather anyone with a spark to better themselves. Get them away from their dead beat friends, uncles and debilitating environments.

More grants for vocational schools. We bring people from all over the world to shadow at our vo techs but I haven't seen anyone from Detroit.

There is a skills gap for blue collar jobs. We have people who want to work and have no chance where they are. Republicans and democrats could actually make all our cities safer, give parents some self worth and give these youth a sliver of hope outside of gangs and drugs.

Am I encouraged this will happen? No. Obama was a beam of light for black people, their one shot they thought. An already hopeless feeling made worse by the liar in chief and party of disingenuous users.

At first glance, I agree with 100% of what you said. I appreciate you mentioning vocational schools as well.

Harry nice message...I would also add the public school systems and their unions in the worst areas absolutely need to be crushed. Vouchers need to be the norm.

Isn't it funny how we talk about the white man keeping the black man down and how cliche that is? But look at our schools that are allocated resources based on local tax bases. Afluent parents get their kids educated at big nice schools with the best teachers and poor kids through no fault of their own are forced to go to worn out warehouses with teachers that couldn't get a job anywhere else. Class war fare is real folks, but dems have abused the message just like the race card that the first hint of a discussion just makes people mad.

Afluent kids make a mistake. They get a high powered attorney who plays golf with the judges on the weekends. A poor kids gets in trouble and he gets a public defender who probably doesn't even care what the consequences are. From that point on an under educated kid with a rap sheet is supposed to compete in the job market with another kid who just fell into a nice school with every bell and whistle available all the while getting his mistakes reduced to misdemeanors and community service?

Look at the town of aurora Colorado. The cherry creek school district drives up the price of houses. People pay more for property to stay away from the poors and all of their baggage. North aurora Just gets worse and worse while new construction rolls on in the south.

As a "conservative," acknowledging this for me used to be inconvenient. I don't know if I'm no longer "conservative" as I understood it, but I prefer to understand where I drill down my principles on largely "what is practical" followed by an adherence to some guiding values and principles (that government closer to the people is inherently more accountable to that population (which is why I'm okay with a bloated city or state government if that's what the population wants - AND that that municipality or state gov doesn't draw from others due to poor decision making), that freedom in all areas should trump almost every other principle, etc...)

State and Federal governments take revenue and allocate a certain percent of discretionary spending yearly. I'm of the opinion that outside of a standing military and large project infrastructure funding, that the bringing up of budgets in school districts with less affluent tax bases is near the top as far as priorities go.

One could argue that this is wealth redistribution, and they'd be correct. However, it's done everywhere to a degree that is acceptable by most. For example, as I understand it (could be wrong) Oklahoma depends on an influx of funding for highways from more affluent states or the Federal gov. And that makes sense due to population densities in those states versus the spread out nature of many western and midwestern states. This is only an example, but it fits my personal criteria of the government choosing to fund infrasture.

Conversely the left is DEAD wrong on the topic of school vouchers.

Also, teacher and administrative accountability is NECESSARY for education to be measured as responsive, and to keep stagnant teachers from mailing it in at the expense of a kids education. I don't know the appropriate design of accountability, but I do grow weary of the phrase 'we're forced to teach to the test" coming from some teachers. Well, yes, for a reason. There's an infinite number of things that can be taught, but only a finite amount of time and resources in which to do that. A civil government has decided what is important and necassary to teach to. If a state government puts forward what is imporant to teach and holds administrators/educators accountable to that, I am comfortable with that.

So, on the topic of education, which there is a high degree of evidence that being successful in school translates into a better life, there are many sides that have to be addressed. Unfortunately, "special" interests on all sides break education reform into something that cannot be achieved (at least to this point).

Some special interests:
Some tax payers
Administrators
Teachers
Union administrators
Some lawyers

There's enough that needs to be addressed in education to piss off all sides to a degree, so effective, comprehensive education reform would truly be a bipartisan coalition with a strong leader.

Lastly, I don't know if the literature exists (I'm sure it does), but most assuredly it is not necessary to throw money away (part of what I mentioned above about accountability, etc). But there has to be good information in existence or obtainable that suggests something like the following: here the amount of resources required (X) over a measurable amount of yearly time (Y) with (Z) amount of adminstrative support (in managing unruly students) that can expect to obtain scholarly success for the average student 95% of the time (or some other acceptable level of defined success). The gap in available resources needed to reach that level of resource/student is where state government should step in to bring to the baseline (most likely via block grants from the Federal level).

I worked in an inner-city hospital where 99.9% of my colleagues and patients were black for two years recently...racism is so deeply ingrained in black culture that it will be a cold day in hell before blacks grossly start "seeing the light." Its not gonna happen.

It is happening. Republicans need to capitalize on it and not piss it away. If the can from 90% to 75%, imagine what that could do in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin? The Dems and their bullshit new world order America would be finished. If people actually got good jobs and Repubs lead the charge, Whoooohooohoooooooooooooa Nelly! That video was a Chicago based activist group. Here's another that had Al Sharpton present. They tore him a new ass.

The dumb thing is lto think it doesn't matter. Blacks and Hispanics either stayed home because they are pissed at the Libs. Or they did the unthinkable and voted Republican. How else do you explain the ass kickings, in IL, CO, NC, and the Governor race in Ohio? That guy carried Cleveland. Freakin Cleveland!

The government at the Federal level needs to do very few things exceptionally well. This monolith that reaches in to every aspect of life is a growing burden.

Soulja, do you have a thought out position on education? Specifically what reforms would actually make a difference? I see it as the single most important tool to giving everybody a chance to succeed. I know the world outside our borders is going to hell in a handbasket, but education, in my mind, is THE big thing that needs reform. I'd like your take on what is necessary for our education system to truly deliver on what is asked of it, preparing the youth, regardless of school district, to enter society ready for employment, ready to contribute, ready to dream, to hope....

All government that works best is local. That includes schools which should be controlled and run by local people dedicated to actual teaching of relevant subject matter not new age curriculum originating in Washington or state capitals. Our children and grandchildren need to be taught and learn the fundamentals of reading, writing, arithmetic and science and not namby-pamby politically correct nonsense. Students and their parents need to be held responsible and not passed on while being uneducated and unqualified.

Amen. The tide is beginning to change and the ironic part is that it took a liberal/socialistic/big government black POTUS to ignite the change in attitudes from some blacks. It's a start. I'll take it.

I agree with all this. I hope I didn't give the impression that I want the Feds to get involved with education OTHER THAN possibly block granting back to the states.

One other area where I could see the Federal level helping is setting this as a CLEAR goal (educational improvement), setting the tone for coming together (a shot at special interests), setting up workshops to get dialogue flowing from all sides including research, and staying the hell out of the way.

Basically i) creating the environment for a path forward, ii) possibly block granting funds to states, iii) and really nothing more.

Brad, that was not the impression I got. I agree wholeheartedly with your "creating the environment for...". That's the primary roll government should play and then let private enterprise engineer the details.

Frederick Douglass, a great Republican, once said, "Every Black man should have a trade." My trade was the military. Others might be all types of mechanic work, plumbing, heat and air, maybe something oilfield related. Whatever it is, black folks need to get that curriculum in the mainstream of inner city school system. I know there are exceptions but most of these kids are being force fed academia, social work, African American Studies(which is the most bullshit, waste of time and money of a degree there is because whats your future? Work for Al Sharpton?) and other things that don't pay shit and keep them Democrat and mad at" white folks." The ones that don't want any part of that deal end up being disinterested and go into to shit that will get them locked up. The vocational part would train them for jobs that would put money in their pockets, off the gubment tit, and a few changing ideologically. This is a disaster scenario for the libs. They want you down, out, dependent on the handouts they "fight" to get you, and hating evil, rich, racist, white republicans.

Whenever someone comes at me with that tired ass Democrat Plantation bullshit, I simply say this, "Hey, if all the rich folks get their money stolen from them by the government, whose gonna give yo ass a job?" "The now middle class guy, that was the rich guy but you dumbasses voted to tax him to death and now both of you aint got a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of? How much sense does that dumbass logic make?" "That's the bullshit Libs have sold yall black asses for years and ya keep on buying it too you own damn demise. Well, this black ass aint buyin!" "Quit hatin on people that have worked hard for what they have and get your own shit in order." "Otherwise STFU because yall keep electing the MF'as that haven't done shit for you other than getting some shitty ass welfare handout that drives your sons and daughters into the dope game."' A game that's designed to get them into the prison industrial complex."

Sorry for the ebonics and the rant, I got carried away and pissed off.
