This my opinion on my Russia would have preferred a Trump presidency.
Because of exactly what our country has been doing since the Iraq war. We are becoming more divided as a nation everyday for the past 15 years. We were united against al Qaeda after the twin towers fell. But Bush and the establishment (ie both sides) voted to invade Iraq. This gave a reason to reestablish a line in the sand to divide the nation back into 2 political hemispheres.
An united US is not good for politics, as politicians need an opponent to trade barbs. If there is no one to argue/fight, politicians would actually have to stand on their principles. By having an opposite side they can vote however they like and then just fall back on attacking the opposition instead of explaining why they say what they say or more importantly why they vote the way they vote.
I believe the Russians saw an opportunity in Trump to further split the country. I'm sure they have been attempting to influence elections since WW2 if not before, just as the US attempts to influence other countries. The use of the bots may have been purposefully obvious given the fact that the appearance of them to support an outsider (non establishment) candidate has met resistance from both sides of the aisle and inflicted deeper fractures within our population.
And it seems to be working as intended.
But this is just my own speculation and opinion with no intelligence agency to back me up.
