Screw the teachers

im just going to say it. ****ing teachers union demanding specific taxes not just a dollar amount.

Gary Richardson:

Republican gubernatorial candidate Gary Richardson called Friday for the state teacher walkout to end, saying "no one gets everything they want."

Richardson, a Tulsa attorney, said he has expressed understanding about teacher outrage "over the lack of leadership at the state Capitol."

"But my support turns to anger when the union tactics are less about education and more about pushing a liberal agenda demanding higher taxes and increased government spending.

"Working Oklahomans took a pay cut in order to fund a teacher pay raise -- and that's something I don't take lightly."

Richardson said, "The results of statewide standardized testing, which should have begun this week, is a critical factor in determining our federal education funding. If the union continues their push for more and more taxes, Oklahoma risks losing close to $700 million in federal funds, and the union will have to answer for that.

"I encourage individual teachers and school board members across Oklahoma to evaluate, without union interference, whether the walkout has strayed from its original purpose. In politics, as in life, no one gets everything they want.”

I was moderately on their side for more money, but screw them if they are demanding specific groups be taxed (@Ponca Dan).

I think they are calling for that specific set of taxes because those are the only ones that have legislative action behind them. It is hard for them to endorse anything if there isn't a bill being voted on in one chamber or the other.

They should say what dollar amount they want, not who they want to take it from. Overstepping.

Kudos for Gary Richardson for being bold enough to state that. Although I still doubt I will be voting for him in the primaries.

With ya now 2001! Going after Capital gains is the last straw for me. As usual the justification is because it only benefits the richest Oklahomans blah blah blah.

Now I want to know what classroom improvements I’ll see with this infusion of funds and what are the consequences for teachers that don’t perform to those improvements. Not holding my breath though.

Accountability for money invested isn't part of the union equation. Strangely enough, I'm not sure that accountability is ever part of a union equation.

I called this from 1,000 miles away.

Teachers in this state (well maybe the union) is like the GOP. Only groups that can completely squander good will and public support.

It’s time for the teachers to break from the union...

I tend to disagree with this thread.

I am no fan of unions.....of any type or form.

But the GOP in this State has held SO FIRM in their beliefs of (i) cut taxes and (ii) fight like hell against ANY tax increases for SO LONG that it is now embedded in everything they consider.....EXCEPT cost cutting in inefficient areas.

I am of the opinion that the teachers staying "out" will be the only way to break a decade or more of "groundhog day".

If there were true leadership in the State GOP, I'd feel differently. But it is painfully obvious that there is not.

My point is the teachers should demand more funding not demand where the funding comes from.

I think you are assuming that the teachers who are walking out are in lockstep and in agreement with the separate Union making those unreasonable demands.

99.999% of the teachers have no clue what the Union is communicating. And I don't think they give a rat's ass where the money comes from.

Probably so, but in the public eye, they stand together. Teachers should stand up and publicly speak AGAINST the union because they all look bad when the union is doing the talking.

Not in my public eye, nor anyone else I know. People I know can tell and realize the difference.

Another one on the side that symbolism matters, and it would benefit the individual teachers to be cognizant of the message that is being received.

This is especially true against the backdrop that the service they are performing is the education of kids.

I see quotes in the news from the union giving demands. I have seen ZERO quotes from teachers saying the union doesn’t speak for them. Not a single one publicly.

I know several teachers and all have said that to me, so I know the union doesn’t represent most teachers, but most people in this state will see the union quotes on tv and get the same “screw the teachers” mentality going.

You say you’re against energy tax credits, yet you wonder why people argue about where their classroom funding should be coming from?

It isn’t this hard, man, yet you argue just to argue, when you know where the solutions should come from. It’s gonna be on Republicans to break away from subsidizing oil and gas.

Wut?

What’s the thought process on wind energy? Our account a few months ago sad that some of their tax incentives would be going away soon because they’ve had them for so long. The teachers seem locked into this revenue stream now. What’s the latest?
Also, I’m not a big fan of the ball and rice thing or any thing lottery/gambling in general.
I think they are all taxes on the poor and do nothing to better Oklahoma .

If the teachers don’t go back to work soon they will be kissing away 700m in federal funding. Get 500m but lose 700m. Maybe they shouldn’t be teaching our kids.

How about the Bartlesville assosiation catching all kinds of grief for saying they'd go back to work if they come up with 100m. That's much less than the OEA is demanding.

This started in Bartlesville. Maybe it'll end here with cooler heads.

They’re holding up traffic now! Just shut down the intersection of Reno and mlk. Walk faster you dipshits!

I'm guessing they aren't actually occupying the street. They were just doddling as they crossed.

Just can't imagine they'd intentionally block traffic.

They had a police and fire truck escort. Coming over the bridge from I-40. They were taking up the entire outside lane. Traffic narrowed to one lane and slow. Turned north on MLK. Cops had the intersection blocked as they went through it. There was a channel 5 helicopter overhead maybe they'll have some video of it. I didn't stay around long enough to see if they were doddling. I ran the red light.

Bartlesville had a plan. A realistic plan. A sensible plan. At this point, I think they are more in tune to the situation vs the OEA and the other Johnny come lately’s that are enjoying teacher Woodstock.

I heard about a private school teacher that had a trip planned for months to take a group of foreign exchange students to tour the capital. The rioting teachers would not allow them in & treated them like crap including shouting obscenities at them.

I'd want to see evidence of that. I just can't imagine that.

I can see them not getting into the capital if it was at capacity. One in one out. But shouting obscenities? Ummm, not buying it.

The union is getting desperate as they know they are up against fence with testing and federal funds. Screw the union. They don’t get to tell us what taxes we must pay.
