It's not like we haven't been warned repeatedly.
Historically speaking that speech was written right in the middle of the red scare of the 1950s and the McCarthy era. Communism has been something to be feared in the past, and we used every means necessary to root out Communist sympathizers. The fear and danger were real as Americans before WWII just watched Russia starve to death 20 million of its own people, and now they were the US's antithesis on the world stage. The best thing America did to move communism forward in the US was to defeat communism in Russia.
