He wants us to make our own products instead of the IP that is stolen and copied.

With high rates you could offer incentives to take over and tenovate or even build in places that have low employment like oil/coal centric states. Jobs and boom, but yeah let's keep buying stuff from overseas. People wonder why their is a wealth gap.

No one wants to see IP stolen or copied, but stealing and copying IP is a separate issue from inflicting a 10% tariff across the board on every product brought into this country.

Your proposition stated in your second paragraph is pure governmental authoritarianism at work It's a danferous step toward a China-like economy that will implode and leave everyone in the lurch. Why not just let the market dceide what needs to be renovated and built and create employment? That's what a free and independent people should want.

I can understand Washington's attitude - really it was the attitude of all of them. They were foundering on paying back their obligations caused by the revolution, and that looked to them like the easist way to prop up the government.

I don't know about Lincoln wanting high tariffs, but it may have been for the same reason.

Teddy Roosevelt was the first step in America's decline from a free society to an authoritarian one. I'm not saying he made us into an authoritarian society. I'm saying he started the process. So it wouldn't surprise me if he thought he should have authority to independently mandate tariffs without anyone's consent, which is what Trump is saying he will do.

Look, I agree that govermental agents will fight tooth and nail against free trade, it would hamper their global vision. But that means we should fight tooth and nail ourselves, because free trade is what makes for human progress. America has never been the "utopian free trade" country I would like it to be. But it started out pretty close and we went from one of the poorest countries in the world to the richest country in the history of the world. And we are on a downward slide because we have let our politicians assume authority to meddle with it. Trump is one in a long line of politicians that want to meddle.

In what way are you thinking China is going to collapse trade? Are you thinking they'll do it on purpose? I'm sorry, but I don't know what you mean when you say their plans have been laid out for everyone to see. Can you direct me to the plans so I can see them? I am not saying that Trump will be solely responsible if trade collapses, but he will certainly have a big hand in it if he gets his way.

Oh, I almost forgot: command economies are not a threat to free trade. America is not threatened by anything China does to itself economically as long as we stand tall with fortitude and practice free trade. We would only get stronger, and they would only get weaker.

Last I checked, there's one Ford dealer in South Korea and 1500 Kia and Hyundai dealers in the US. There's one thing saving us from year after year after year massive trade deficits. The US buck world reserve currency status.

Last I checked, there's one Ford dealer in South Korea and 1500 Kia and Hyundai dealers in the US. There's one thing saving us from year after year after year massive trade deficits. The US buck world reserve currency status.

South Korea eliminated the tariff on American made vehicles imported to South Korea around three years ago, the EU still has a 10% tariff on the same, while the US has a 2.5% tariff on European imported vehicles. I have some friends that are involved in import/export of high line vehicles that have to deal with that. Still not as bad as what is in Poland or China 23%, 25%.
