Some of you older guys may remember this as it happened in 1976.

It turns out there was a landmark Supreme Court Case that involves RBG, OSU, Stillwater and Honk ’n Holler, an early Stillwater convenience store.

I was at OSU at the time, but I don’t remember the case at all….possibly because I don’t drink.

The case involved the state law that said women could purchase beer at 18 but men could not purchase beer until 21. Both men and women could drink at 18 but men needed someone to purchase it for them if they were under 21. Guys, you needed your 18 year old girlfriend or sister to buy your beer for you even if you were 20!

Growing up in Stillwater I do remember stopping at the Honk ’n Holler often with my Dad, especially in the 60’s before I could drive, so he could get cigarettes and beer. He did just honk ’n holler in those days!

The links below are from a couple of old O’Colly articles about the case.

Oh I remember.
Living in Lawton, I was 16 with 1st car.
Me and the crew always gravitated to the 18 year old gals for that very reason.
Plus, they knew cool stuff about boinking.

I remember Honk n Holler I knew the guy who owned it, had beers with him several times.

I do not believe the state law S stated is accurate. May have been a Payne County law.

Tap Room in Tulsa on 15th, circa 1980, was easy peasy to get beer at age 16.

I"ll see that bluff and raise. Hell, we drank real whiskey at the Log Cabin (north of Bristow) in 64-66 while frosh/sophs at OSU. Funny thing I learned was mom and dad also visited the joint back in the late 40's.
