Organized religion is what the individual makes of it. There are plenty of people that use religion as a means of self guidance. There are others that use it as a platform to promote themselves as superior. You see it in every religion. Perfect example is Islam. There are plenty of Muslims that follow Islam for self guidance. There are others that use Islam as a platform for mass murder.
Like you, I tried the church thing when I was younger but found that a)I didn't believe in God and b)didn't need a church or other religious leader/institution for self guidance. To each their own.
