Position Breakdown - WR

Coach outgoing - Kasey Dunn
Coach incoming - Theron Aych

Theron Aych has grad assistance experience at Houston and Washington. He has experience as a special teams coach at Central Missouri. He has experience as a WR coach at Central Missouri, UTEP(2x), and Arizona. He also was the assistant head coach at Fort Scott (CC) and Angelo State. He has OC coaching experience at Angelo State and Tennessee State. He also was an offensive analyst at Marshall.

From strictly a coaching Wide Receivers viewpoint we lost one of the best in the business. Dunn rep and track record as a WR coach speak for themselves. In fact, you could say that the “want/need/pressure” to keep him at OSU in that capacity is what got him the OC job here. He demanded a lot out of his guys in the WR room and he got results.

So after 14 season of having the same WR coach what do we expect out of the new coach Theron Aych? Off the bat you have to like his experience and the fact that he has served as an OC at other places. He has some deep Texas ties as he has served as a coach at UTEP two times.

Aych looks to be a solid coach but his track record or list of pupils isn’t exactly prominent. If I’m being honest, this hire was a bit underwhelming. At your Rb and WR coaching positions you want a dynamic recruiter and maybe a young energetic up and coming coach. I do think that Doug Meacham will be assisting in this room more than probably any other offensive staff room and there are holdover WR assistant coaches like Tracin Wallace to bridge the gap between Dunn and Aych. Our WR reputation is a very good one and I just don’t see that declining but I would of liked a better hire here.

Players outgoing:
Graduates/NFL
- Brennan Presley, Rashod Owens, Cale Cabbiness

Transferred out - De’Zhaun Stribling, Jalen Pope

Players Incoming:
Recruiting Class - Matrail Lopez, Kameron Powell, Royal Capell, Jaden Perez

Transferred In - Shamar Rigby So. (Purdue), Sam Jackson Sr. (Auburn), Jaylen Lloyd Jr. (Nebraska)

Players Returning:
Freshman - Tre Griffiths

Sophomore - Tykie Andrews, Cameron Heard

Junior - Gavin Freeman, Talyn Shettron, Ayo Shotomide-King

Senior - Da’Wain Lofton, Kyler Pearson

We lost a lot of production at this position. As hard as it is to see BP graduate, it might be harder to see De’Zhaun Stribling transfer out. I say that because WR is a position OSU has been known for and to have a guy leave who could have added to the lineage and had eligibility remaining is tough to swallow. However, we had big turnover after a terrible season in which we didn’t do many of our WR’s any favors in showcasing them. Let’s hope that changes quickly with this new staff.

We definitely have a WR room full of a similar skill set and size. Check this out:

Royal Capell 5’10 190
Gavin Freeman 5’8 185
Cameron Heard 6’0 170
Sam Jackson 5’10 190
Jaylen Lloyd 5’10 180
Da’Wain Lofton 5’11 190
Kyler Pearson 5’8 150
Matrail Lopez 5’11 175
Jaden Perez 5’11 156
Tykie Andrews 5’11 200

That’s 10 out of the 15 guys in the WR room. There is going to be a lot of competition among this list of guys for playing time. Guys that jump off that list to me are Da’Wain Lofton and Gavin Freeman. Both of those guys got spot duty for us last year and in my opinion proved themselves and showed good potential. Both also were limited because we wanted to save them for the future.

Freeman is just a tough WR that reminds me of a Colton Chelf but perhaps will give us more production. Freeman to me is better than Kyler Pearson and somewhat takes his snaps from a WR perspective. I think Pearson could make an impact on special teams but isn’t really a guy we will count on heavily at WR.

Lofton came in towards the end of last season and just is a guy that can get open down field and make plays. I’m glad we were able to keep him as I think he has a chance to be dynamic.

Cameron Heard is a guy that could come on and we have heard good things about but he just hasn’t really been given much time to showcase it. He made a heck of a catch in the Texas Tech game and got slammed down to the ground on his head. Probably should have been a penalty but the kid showed toughness.

It’s hard to say what Tykie Andrews is or can be?

The 3 transfers we took are interesting:

Jaylen Lloyd has big time speed. As the fastest WR and with his experience he will be a guy that sees the field and stretches it for us.

Sam Jackson hasn’t shown much in the way of production but his catch radius was raved about by new OSU qb Hauss Hejny in a recent interview. Sam is a big question mark but OC DM brought him here for a reason and really likes his skill set.

Shamar Rigby is an up and comer and he has a chance to see the field right away. With not as much competition regarding bigger bodied WR’s he can come make an impact right away.

Of the 4 WR recruits we got in the 25 class I guess I like Kam Powell and Royal Capell chances of seeing the field early better. I think both may be more ready to bite early and both are on campus early to help aid that. More on them below.

Tre Griffiths is a guy I have high hopes for. I think he has a high ceiling and could be a big time WR at osu. I’m just not sure he will separate and show that in the upcoming year because he is very young still and I don’t think he will be able to separate from the pack and be a go to WR just yet.

Ayo Shotomide-King is a heck of a get for us. Not much talk about him but we went and found him similar to how we found Leon Johnson. He is a big bodied possession WR that we don’t have a lot of currently. I was impressed with him last year in his smaller role. He has a chance to take on a much bigger role this year.

Talyn Shettron you just feel bad for. So many injuries and every time he seems to be making his move he gets hurt. 2 years ago he was starting to show out and he gets hurt against West Virginia. This last year he has the big game against Tulsa and is showing big potential and he gets hurt. He looks like a beast in workouts I have seen so far this off season. He has something to prove but needs to stay healthy.

My predicted depth chart (2 deep):

WR X - Da’Wain Lofton (Sam Jackson) or (Cameron Heard)

WR Z- Talyn Shettron (Shamar Rigby) or (Ayo Shotomide-King) (Tre Griffiths)

WR Slot - Gavin Freeman (Jaylen Lloyd) (Royal Capell)

As stated with the TE breakdown, I think there are going to be times you will see Oscar Hammond and Will Monney play in like a 4th WR spot and we go 4 wide. I also think there are times we could put a speed option set out there and run 3 - 4 guys that are 5’11 180 and run some creative stuff with that. Keep in mind also that Sam Jackson has experience as a QB. OC DM can get real creative with this group and I think we will see that.

A few categories to put some guys in:

(The time is now) - I mean this has to be Talyn Shettron. Feel for the kid and his injuries. He has big potential and an NFL frame. He also has a depth chart advantage in my opinion. A lot of OSU star WR’s broke out their JR year. If he doesn’t do it this year he will be passed by a guy like Tre Griffiths or Shamar Rigby.

(Question marks) - I’m going to say all 3 transfers. Lloyd is probably the most proven of the 3. Rigby has a big opportunity at osu. Jackson might be the biggest question mark based on lack of production at Auburn and having once been a Qb at TCU.

(Young guys with Big Upside)- I’m just going to say this entire freshman class. I know some will pan out more than others but I love all 4 WR recruits in the 25 class.

This freshman class:

Royal Capell -he to me seems most ready to play. While he is 5’10 180 I’d say his build is more ready for D1 football than any of the other freshman. He looks the part and is already on campus getting acclimated. What’s the saying? “Young pups bite early?”

Kam Powell - Also on campus early one could argue he might have the better chance of seeing the field early. He is more of a possession WR and may fit more on the depth chart with the Z position where there is less competition. This kids tape doesn’t lie and shows a kid who can go up and get the ball.

Matrail Lopez - love his potential but I think he is just smaller framed and will have a hard time making a move early. Can’t wait to see what he can do in the future. Being a local kid I’d say we can be patient with this one and will be rewarded with that patients and what he becomes.

Jaden Perez - see what was said about Lopez. Perez is even smaller than Lopez and with both of them not making it to campus early along with having smaller frames I just think it’s going to take them more time to acclimate to the D1 level. They both are very talented however and have big time speed and skill for the future.

Sunmary:
What can we expect at this position? With the loss in production and the change over in coaching will we lose out on what has been a major strength position at OSU for years and years? We have talent. Some is unproven. Some of it is very young. Some has been injured. But we aren’t lacking guys to get the ball to or guys that can make you miss after the catch. We lost an NFL talent in Stribling and that hurts and right now it doesn’t appear we have an NFL talent to replace that. I’d say we just need to allow this new group a chance to work themselves into that spot. A guy to make that jump and be the guy or guys. Lofton is going to be a good WR. Shettron has the frame he needs to now prove it. Rigby could come and show potential to be that guy. Could Shotomide-King do it? And all the young guys. I think here we just need to give guys a chance and watch them develop into those roles.

What’s your two deep WR position look like? Or which WR(s) do you think step into being big time WR’s at OSU?
