Peter Theil gets it.

Please forgive me, I am old and most things related to computers or the internet are way over my head. Would someone please explain to me what google has done to make people upset? I don’t know or understand what the problem is. Would you please be so kind as to bring me up to speed?

They're a monopoly.
A monopoly of what? Usually a monopoly involves a government keeping competitors at a disadvantage via regulations, fees, harassment suits, that kind of thing. Is that the case with google? I know this is stupid but I don’t really know exactly what google does. How is it a monoply, and how did it get to be one?

Ideas and execution apparently....

You own 97% of mobile search. I shouldn't have to explain the implications of that or that they curate those searches with no oversite.

97% of the information distributed with 100% control of that information is some serious shit.

I have absolutely no idea what that means. I assume google owns a 97% share of something. A search engine, whatever that means. My question is how did it get that large a share? If it was by outcompeting everyone else, what is the problem? If the company got various governments to keep the competition out I can see a big problem. So did google get this 97% share by being the best and being the company the vast majority of the public turned to for its services, or did it do it by way of government corruption?

Get your facts straight... we only drive 96.1% of mobile search traffic.

Of course mobile discovery is only 48% originated with search. But that isn't a convenient stat to quote when you want to beat up on Google.

Information is a commodity. Your personal information is traded all the time.

Fire up that AI god and have it fix the score.

Tell it I take it all back.

I feel like we’re talking in different languages. I have no idea what that means. Nor do I understand what that has to do with google being a monopoly. Nor do I understand what is so troubling. Just to make it clear, I’m not trying to bait you into a trap. I sincerely don’t know what google is doing wrong. If I have a question I can go to google and it will direct me to countless places where I can find the answer. That’s the extent of what I know about google. There must be more to it for people to be upset with the company. I just don’t know what the “more to it” is.

Do you understand that they know everything (everything isn't even a slight exaggeration) about you and sell that knowledge. Now extrapolate that to every American. They control leverage on everyone.

What's more valuable than information?

No, I did not know they know everything there is to know about me, nor that they sell the information. To whom do they sell it? What leverage does that give them? How do they know so much about me? You mean they know things like my shoe size, and to which park I like to take my granddaughters, and which mouthwash I prefer, and what is my favorite brand of tires for my work vehicles, things like that? Or do they know my Social Security number, my checking and saving account numbers, what investments I have? Stolen identity knowledge? Are they selling that information? Is that what has people upset? How do they come by that information? I’ll be upset with you if that is what you are talking about. But that still doesn’t make them a monopoly, which is what you said at first. How are they a monopoly?

Gross exaggeration.

There are articles everywhere debating the topic of google being a monopoly. Missouri is going to open a case. Google fired a person from a google supported think tank for writing a piece supporting them being a monopoly. It's been in the news for years.

I'm not the type to explain shit when somebody's already covered that ground.

OK, thank you for the patience you have shown me.

Oh, I wanted to add that a true monopoly is not possible without government complicity. If google is a true monopoly (has become so through government manipulation) it seems unlikely the government would tackle them as a monopoly. If google has acquired its market share by being better than everyone else, then most likely those calling for the government to investigate them are doing so as an effort to increase the already overpowering force of the regulatory state on a business because it is successful. I am always leery of those that beg the government to “do something” about a situation they don’t like. It puts our liberty in jeopardy.

caveat emptor

i don't think you get it

Buyer beware. I agree. What am I not getting? The original response to my question was that google is a monopoly. What I asked was what makes it a monopoly and how did it get to be a monopoly. I said right up front I was asking the board to help me out. Instead I’m told to google it. It’s difficult to have a conversation when the other party doesn’t want to participate. But that’s okay, we just won’t have a conversation.

Bring yourself up to speed then we can have a discussion.

Commenting with no knowledge while refuting what I said isn't starting a conversation, that's starting an argument.

Refuted how? I began the whole conversation stipulating that I do not know why people are upset wth google. I asked those of you in the know to give me an educated breakdown. I have not attempted to start an argument. I was seeking information from people who were willing to dispense it. You said the problem with google is it’s a monopoly. I asked what makes that so. You replied it knows everything there is to know about me and it sells that information. I asked a couple of questions about that assertion, and repeated my request as to how it became a monopoly. You told me to look it up, you didn’t want to be bothered. I thanked you for your time. End of conversation. Easy as that. No attempt on my part to start an argument. If google has done something wrong that should make me dislike them it would be nice to know what they did. That was the whole point of my asking the questions. Can we still be friends?
