The only official prospective tour I went on back in the day was at Phillips University. The admissions office welcomed me by name on one of those small black signs with the plastic white letters. I was impressed. I think we talked to a history professor and then they bought me a milkshake at "The Hub." PU folded 3 or 4 years later. I also met with a professor at UCO who knew my grandfather. I practically grew up on the OSU campus, so I never went on a tour.
I've been working on college campuses for almost 10 years now. The tour arms race is hilarious. I've often felt a moral obligation to step in and provide the truth about whatever yarn the student tour guide is spinning. When I was at the $40,000/year mid-tier private place, I would want to just yell "RUN!" to tour groups from across the quad.
