On 1/10 our next opponent defeated UNI 25-13 just in case anyone was under the illusion that it was going to get easier. :)
125 Pic vs. Danny Vega (Vega dec. Schwarm UNI 10-6.} Dec. by Pic 3-0
133 Witcraft vs. Zach Price dec. Witcraft 6-0
141 Dusty Hone vs. Clay Clarkson ( Clarkson lost to Blockhus 7-5) ) dec. Hone but a toss-up match. 9-0
149 Boo Lewallen vs. Henry Pohlmeyer#17 (Pohlmeyer dec. Max Thomsen 9-1) dec. Boo
12-0
157 Wyatt Sheets vs. Colton Carlson Another toss up match IMO Dec. Carlson 12-3
165 Wittlake vs. Tanner Cook MD Wittlake 16-3
174 Joe Smith vs. Cade King Joe Smith md 20-3
184 Montalvo vs. Zach Carlson dec. Montalvo 23-3
197 Geer vs. Tanner Sloan dec. Geer 26-3
285 Austin Harris vs. Blake Wolters dec. Wolters 26-6
I believe Wyatt Sheets can defeat Carlson but I also believe Clarkson could dec. Hone.so I gave Hone the toss-up win. Based on how #17 Pohlmeyer handled Thomsen and on his past wrestling record he will give Boo all he can handle. Against UNI they won 6 of 10 matches and also had pins at 165 and 197. We had a major and a tech fall at those two weights. I show a win for us 26-6 but it will not be easy.

Wittlake better spend some time working on his bridging this week.
At first glance he has an extremely impressive record14-2 with 12 falls. Any time you have that many falls you have to be good at pinning people but a look at his opponents somewhat diminishes his record. His falls were over Jose Cooper OK #269 on Wrestle stats, Chase Straw #60, Austin Yant #65, Shane Jones #63, Drew Hughes #33, Kellen Ekern #97, Luke Fortuna #95, Milik Dawkins #80, Hayden Harris not D1 from Colorado Mesa, Tate Alllison not D1 Chadron State, Jake Silverstein #147 and Jack Johnson #234. He is not ranked in the top 25 in the latest Flo rankings. Still, I would concur that he is a threat to pin. I am going to still going to predict a major for Wittlake. BTW his 2 losses were a major decision by #37 Cole Moody and he was pinned by Fred Green not D1 from Colorado Mesa.
I am not saying Wittlake will not have to be careful but a comparison of the two wrestlers records shows a much tougher schedule for Witlake who is ranked #9.

Some context on who Cook has pinned this year:
Shane Jones has been pinned 5 times in 153 career matches. Cook is the only one to pin him this season, he held Josh Shields and Shane Griffith to decisions this season.

Chase Straw has been pinned 3 times in 135 career matches. Cook is the only one to pin him this season, he held Wittlake, Shields, Fogarty and Marinelli to decision this season.

Austin Yant has been pinned 3 times in 58 career matches, once this year by Cook. Was majored by Wittlake and Isaiah White this season.

Drew Hughes has been pinned 6 times in 111 career matches, twice this season, once by Cook and once by Evan Wick. 2 of his other 4 career losses by fall were to Mark Hall and Isaiah Martinez. He lost in SV to Tanner Skidgel this season.

Luke Fortuna has been pinned 6 times in 113 matches and Milik Dawkins has been pinned 7 times in 86 matches and went the distance with both Ethan Smith and Jordan Kutler this season.

Fred Green was a 4x Washington champ who spent 4 years in D1 rooms at Boise St, Virginia and Oregon St before ending up at Colorado Mesa. Green has a few legit D1 wins including BJ Clagon, Clayton Ream and Solomon Chishko. Cook put him on his back in the first 30 seconds of their match, Green pinned him in a headlock at the end of the first period after what started out as a 50/50 throw position.

Cook’s match against Moody was his first home dual in the lineup and I think he was a little too amped up. He inside tripped Moody to his backin the first minute but Moody was able to roll out of it and get an escape without giving up nearfall. Cook immediately forced a cement mixer that didn’t work and showed signs of gassing shortly after. I don’t think he’ll lose to Moody again.

Cook’s other 2 wins are by tech fall and by injury default in a match where he was leading the top ranked D2 wrestler 6-0 at the end of the first.

The more I look at Tanner Cook (his record and videos) the more I am impressed. He is not ranked in the top 25 in Flo's latest rankings (11/27) but wrestlestat has him at @23. This is his chance to finally wrestle someone in the top 25 and if he were to win he would obviously jump into the rankings. This could be a very interesting match. Will Travis wrestle more conservatively? Wittlake is not a incautious wrestler and rarely makes huge mistakes. His forte is more on top than on his feet. He is also very strong. Thanks to wf89 for pointing out his amazing pin record. Cook was a div 2 NY state champ his sr. year in HS at 145 after finishing in 2nd place his Jr. year.

Tanner Cook will be a fun wrestler to follow at the Big 12 tournament. Chandler Rogers was one of those guys that you just loved to watch and I think Cook will be an entertainer as well. You have to respect any team that defeats UNI.

I think that Wittlake's strength and his wrestling conservative will make it very difficult for Cook to win. Wittlake this year has not put himself in bad positions and I think will soundly beat Cook. In most matches I want Wittlake to be more aggressive but in this match I think he should wrestle his standard conservative match and win 6 to 2. Montalvo and Geer matches will be very important matches for us in rankings

But rankings aren't really important.

Of course ranking are important and you will see that when we wrestle Iowa in a couple of weeks. By rankings they will kill us, that night wrestling they will kill us. Here is how you go up in rankings but also how you build confidence and jump levels by beating a ranked wrestler, beating another ranked wrestler, and beating an even higher ranked wrestler without losing to unranked wrestlers. Some say it does not count to conference and nationals. I disagree. The confidence and skill are built in season where you are ready to win at the end of the season. Every match is important. There are very few Jake Rosholt's or Mark Branch's who just come from nowhere and win at the end.

It's about how you wrestle, improving, learning, defending, scoring from different positions, winning, etc not your ranking. Is Boo suddenly a better wrestler now that he is #1 vs when he was #5, no. He is #1 because Lugo lost a match, that has no impact on how good Boo is or who he is prepared to beat.

As those things happen your ranking should go up so they are sort of tied together. Rankings will be important for Picc because if he is ranked, seeded 4th or 5th he will have Spencer lee in the Semi's with hardly any chance of winning versus if he was 2 or 3 seed he would have a much better chance of wrestling Saturday night. There should be a strong correlation between a wrestler improving as you have indicated and his ranking. But bottom line it is about becoming the best wrestler you can. Boo is a better wrestler now versus in the beginning of the year his confidence in his shoulder has to be increasing which has meant he can go for a little bit more.

Reece looked good. He is so much fun to watch. Drives me insane at times but I think he is our most entertaining wrestler.

Great win for Montalvo. He and Wittlake are making big strides every week. Joe looked sluggish but the outcome was never in doubt. I thought Sheets wrestled well against a quality opponent.

Still dont have a HWT. How is Martin doing in the room against Harris and Putnam?

Pic looked better on his feet than he has and wrestled good. Reece got a victory but just wrestled okay. Hone wrestled okay seems to have dropped a notch from earlier in the year. Boo was great on top not so good on his feet. Sheets wrestled okay had a good 3rd period. Wittlake wrestled smart and strong. The question is can he score on the real good wrestlers. Joe was okay but has not improved in the last week. We need to see him start to explode. Montalvo controlled the match but he needs to be able to get takedowns. Geer took control right away its a shame sloan got injured. Hwt tries in hardest got in some good shots but his shots lost the match. I hope Martin develops and takes this weight class. Missouri should be more of a test but good win.

Great summary. Thank you.

Good analysis Harleycowboy. I agree. If Picc wrestled with that aggression and confidence in every match he could be #1 (even against Lee). I like the way Reece wrestles but tonight was not his best night, Boo's top game was his savior tonight, he has spent sometime in the room improving that skill set and it paid off for him tonight, great job! Sheet's confidence is building, good 3rd. Wittlake had a plan for that match and followed it, wrestled great except at the end with the reversal which gave up some unnecessary points and you could see on his face he knew better. Lucky call for Montalvo but he did control the match, he does need more takedown options, Geer wrestled well and tough. Harris is a good wrestler just growing into that weight right now and still getting used to wrestling others at that weight,. Go pokes on Sunday!!!

Wyatt & Joe both wrestled backups. WrestleStat has both of those guys outside the top 150.

Good recap of the match by all. Just a few thoughts. At 165 I believe we saw how Tanner Cook gets most of his falls in his failed attempt at a cement mixer. It did not work on Wittlake who wrestled a very good conservative match. At 174 Joe's opponent was 3-5 on the year and yet Joe gave up a takedown and was obviously gassed. The takedowns were there for the taking and he chose to ride or coast much of the match. He needs to get in better shape and cut his weight right. We matched up well against South Dakota State. Stat wise we gave up five takedowns (2 in the hwt match). We had 25 takedowns for a 5-1 advantage. We had 6 near falls and they had none. We had 5 riding time points and would have had 6 but for Pic's tech fall. I thought we wrestled well.

Agree. If I had one item for Sheets to work on it would be to get some tips on turning from Picc and Boo. Sheets can ride and if he added turning to his offense he could win some of these tight matches he gets in.
