I read the article but do not see the connection to a free market. Can you explain?
Does Sys not understand difference in free market and regulations/protections set up to protect companies that invest in discovery?
Pharma is charging whatever they can charge. No dreaded regulation. Consumers in other countries collectively negotiate these deals (via their elected representatives) and get cheaper scrips.
People insist on making unhealthy decisions, the demand for drugs goes up. The price goes up.

I think expecting the health insurance industry to participate in reforming health care is like allowing a coyote to help protect a hen house. IMy own party has largely sold out to that industry, they're afraid to push single payer once and for all and get populist, and not doing so is a grave mistake. It's gonna get crazy when an upperclass has cutting edge gene editing and genetic treatments for all these lethal diseases and poor folks can't access it.
And the very first thing they need to do is have Uncle Sam underwrite enough medical schools to start graduating way more doctors.
