He said Trump is a symptom not the cause. That’s about it regarding Trumps name being directly invoked.
Guess you only heard what media wants to put out there. I listened to most of it. Here is a snippet of what he said. Again my displeasure is the fact Obama steps on unspoken rule by saying Trump is destroying democracy and will not be called on hypocrisy.

I absolutely love and agree with that quote. I wonder, however, if Mr. Obama realizes he is talking about himself and his team as much as Trump and his team. In my opinion the rise of Trump's team is a response/reaction to the divisive rhetoric and actions started by Obama and the left wing of this country. However, it is also my opinion that it is a mistake for the Republicans to honor Trump for stealing the Democrat playbook and turning it on them. No, not a mistake. A tragedy. It is a tactic that is separating the country into a wider divide. If the two teams don't come to their senses they may lead us into a civil war. I don't think any of us want that.

I also don’t interpret what you quoted as him saying “Trump is destroying democracy”.
I will agree that it violates the commonly understood “unwritten rule” you mention. He could have said essentially the same thing without directly mentioning Trump and adhered to that unwritten rule.
As deeply as America is right now, I have a hard time getting my jimmy rustled by someone not honoring an unwritten rule/tradition. I also definitely foresee Trump thumbing his nose at this same rule when he is out of office.

I suppose it is questionable who dragged whom into the gutter. But the country is being dragged there regardless of who started it. My thinking is the gutter is not where we should want to be.
