On paper this dual does not excite but some interesting matchups including Andrew Alirez v. Boo Lewallen at 149.I see it as a close decision for Boo but Alirez is certainly a good enough wrestler to make it exciting. At 133 Witcraft vs, Mosha Schwartz is a tossup. Both wrestlers are known for big moves. This could be our only loss in the dual but hoping that Reese hits one of his big moves for the win. Montalvo T 184 wrestles Anthony Clothier in another close match. Dakota Geer at 197 will have his hands full with Jacob Seely, another good wrestler. I am predicting through orange colored glasses a shutout for OK State but there is good competition at several weights that could cloud my vision.
125 Pic V. Jace Koelzer
133 Reese Witcraft V. Mosha Schwartz
141 Gfeller V. Brody Lamb
149 Boo V. Andrew Alirez (Best matchup of the dual)
157 Wyatt Sheets V. Jimmy Fate (his Fate is sealed)
165 Travis Witlake V. Austin Matthews ( wrestle Stat in what must be an error has Matthews winning)
174 Shomers V. Billy Higgins
184 Montalvo V. Anthony Clothier
197 Dakota Geer V. Jacob Seely
285 Austin Harris V. Dalton Robertson

Just noticed on a related story on Andrew Alirez that his nickname is Boo Boo.
So it will be Boo Vs. Boo Boo at 149. Alirez was in the finals at the scuffle and lost a close 3-2 decision to Jaden Abas. He is 4 X Colorado State Champ, 3X Fargo All-American and finalist at Super 32.

I think that their HWT won the Scuffle and is very good on top. I would predict we are going to lose at Hwt. Yes 149 should be a good match but Boo should beat a true freshman. However I remember during freestyle season Alirez beat G several times soundly.

Just watched the semi match between Robertson and Demetrius Thomas from Pitt and you are right.Robertson is a winner on top. He was behind 4-1 going to the third and Thomas had two takedowns and ha 1:25 of riding time.
Robertson took top, turned him almost immediately for a four and then rode him out. Robertson and Harris are about the same size as both came up from 197 but Robertson does look more skilled especially on top. To further complicate this picture Robertson lost to Bear Hughes of OK State by a major decision at 184 a year or two ago. I would predict that Austin Harris needs to win on his feet and not get taken down or choose down but it would still be a stretch for Harris to win.

Robertson HWT in the finals got hurt and Injury defaulted not sure if he will wrestle or not

Austin Matthews has not wrestled well this year, but he is a 3x NCAA qualifier reaching the round of 16 twice for Edinboro.

It's beneficial for all of these teams that have gotten into the Big 12. My friends in Colorado are curious to see how Nickerdoodles does with this influx of talent. They signed arguably Colorado's number 2 recruit in Alirez. Colton Schultz being the top signee from the class of 19. I think I'll slip on over to Stillwater and watch.

John mentioned Schultz the other day. Said we wanted to go after him (when Kerkvliet de-committed), but Schultz verballed to ASU that same week. Might even have been the same day.

Kerkvliet's timing was not great.

Last night Northern Colorado lost to Oregon State 21-12. They lost the first three weights by decisions before Alirez got their first win at 149 with a 7-5 decision. Nathan Moore of No. Colorado got a decision at 157 and they had a fall at 174 by Billy Higgins. These were their only wins and they did not wrestle Robertson at 285 where they lost 4-1.

Pic wins by tech., Witcraft lost a match he dominated in the beginning it is like Coach Smith states he needs to learn to focus the entire match. Hone wins by decision at 41. Boo had a great 3rd period and wins by decision something like 11 to 5. Sheets won 17 to 4 with lots of takedowns vs Moore a true freshman. Whitlake wins by tech fall in the first period. Weak opponent but Whitlake looked strong. He needs to keep progressing getting confidence. Shomers won by major but the news with this is Joe Smith did not wrestle in this dual. There was not any mention why during the dual. Montalvo wins 6 to 3 and it was a solid win. Geer wins by tech fall in the second period. Lots of takedowns and lots of back points for Geer.

Frustrating that a talent like G hasn’t been able to put it together this year and take the spot.

Silver lining I guess might be he gets an additional year.

Do we know he can’t win the spot or is he still nursing an injury?

He wrestled at the scuffle and then they were going to possibly wrestle off for the spot Friday or Saturday. Taking that into account and then the info from within the program that G has just flat struggled with weight this year makes you wonder if G just can’t keep the weight off and wrestle well enough to be the guy.

Didn’t sound too pleased about it either....
My major impression of the dual is we dominated both on our feet and on the mat. My unofficial count in takedowns was 37-3. We also rode strongly and had riding time points in 7 of the ten matches. Technically I guess in 5 matches as Pic and Dakota did not get RT points because of their tech falls. Outstanding wrestler IMO was Boo who had an 11-4 win over by far their best wrestler. I almost want to give the award to Wyatt however as he had 7 takedowns to go along with a brutal ride to win 17-4. Looked shades of his dad in his riding ability and he has progressed more in the past two weeks than any wrestler on the team. Do not know the background on Kaden and Joe but the backups looked admirable filling in. My shut out prediction fell short by a point but Witcraft had 5 takedowns and should have been able to circle the mat for 15 seconds at the end.
LETS GO POKES!!!

Wyatt seems to be getting close to an AA possibility? Man, if you want to make me happy as a Coach or even a fan, just have breakthrough moments where it's obvious that you are improving. I've only listened to us on the radio so far this season, and read results, etc, but these guys seem to be pretty freakin scrappy and improving!

Sheets did look good very quick and strong with his takedowns but I would need to see him wrestle good and beat a couple of guys rated in the top 12 like Whitlake has done before I start thinking maybe he could be an all American. I am now thinking maybe Whitlake could be an all American. I listened to Coach Smith's interview and I believe Witcraft will be getting reality therapy for the next week in practice. In high school I saw where he would not take down and wouldn't put an ounce of energy into riding. After 2 minutes of that match I would not have given Northern Col. a chance to win that match. But with being sloppy, not focused and not finishing takedowns he found a way to lose. I hope that he figures out Division 1 college wrestling before the year is done because he flashes great potential and then flashes waste of talent. Also Joe and Kaden appear to be wasting talent also. Pic 1 of our 2 top wrestlers and be a great chance to all American. Hone gives everything to wrestling and he is solid as can be but I don't think has G's potential. Boo is one of our 2 best wrestlers but as he said I wish he would not wait to the 3rd period to pull away. Shomers is a battler but is not a 74. Montalvo wrestled well today. We should make a decision what weight Geer is wrestling so if he is not going to wrestle 84 he can work at getting bigger and stronger. Harris works hard but should not be the HWT for the Cowboys. I look forward to wrestlers continuing to improve especially our young wrestlers so we can challenge for the team championship down the road.

Witcraft needs to stop going for the big move all of the time and just focus on building a win. He was killing Schwartz with simple takedowns until he decided to go for a pin on every move. That and learning to ride will improve his game considerably. Another few seconds of riding time in the first period and he wins that match. As I told someone at the Scuffle. no lead is safe in a Witcraft match - in either direction. It's difficult to say how much Sheets has improved, due to the lack of competition. He looked pretty good at the Scuffle, until he got trounced by Hidlay from NC State. But Hidlay trounced everyone. Yes, Hone gives 100% every match and is dependable, but he doesn't have G's upside. We would be a much better team if all of the guys worked as hard as Hone appears to.

A look at Wyatt Sheets losses shows he lost to #2 ranked Hidlay,#20 ranked Justin Thomas of Oklahoma 5-3 (A match is could have won),#5 Kennedy Monday 3-2(another match he could have won), #10 ranked Josh Humphrey of Lehigh and #25 ranked Taleb Rahmani of Pitt. In the near future he will wrestle #3 David Carr of Iowa State, #4 Caleb Young of Iowa, rematch with #20 Justin Thomas OU and #25 Taleb Rahmani of Pitt, #15 ranked Jaques Jarrett of Missouri. I predict he will now win 2 or 3 of those matches and be ranked in the top 20 going into the Big 12. He has made major progress in the last 2-3 weeks primarily in his confidence and his ability on his feet.

Quincy, not Kennedy. Also, Wyatt beat Rahmani at the scuffle.

I do have to admit that he is at least 1 level higher with his wrestling now compared to when he wrestled Lehigh early in the season. After that match my thought was we need to get a 157 for sure. I still think that we should be better at 157 but maybe if he keeps improving?

How many “levels” are there?
1 OK State wrestler
2 Ok State starter
3 NCAA qualifier
4 AA
5 semifinalist/finalist
6NCAA champ
7 Multiple time champ

Harley has been talking about levels since I first saw him post. So, he would need to be the one to describe them.

When I talk about jumping levels I think of it more of a subjective feeling watching a wrestler who is obviously better than he was a short time ago. Hits a period of growth where he obviously is better on his feet, or better on riding and turning wrestlers and sometimes improves on bottom and gets away with more ease. I think that it is a vision and a sense in matches where you see more clearly openings to score on your opponents and you sense when your opponent attacks, your quicker on how to defend. Whitlake seems to be an example where when we wrestled Oklahoma he beat Dover 3 to 2 and Dover is a true freshman 157. He couldn't see or sense opportunities to score (most of his matches he had 1 or 2 good shots). Now he is wrestling better wrestlers and sees or senses 5 or 6 opportunities to score from his feet and his abilities and confidence increase his chances of scoring on each of these opportunities. Conditioning improvements also are involved often. Yes it is an obvious jump in ability to win and yes if I was going to quantify this jumping levels I might describe it as moving from a likely NCAA qualifier( beginning of the year) to a likely all American later in the year. Also the jump could be quantified from in the beginning of the year a potential all American to a real contender for the National Championship. These changes would not be based on injuries or drop of your opponents but based on your own improvement. This jumping levels could also occur in the off season also or whenever.

Good explanation Harley. Not a criticism but neither our 65 pounder or our 33 pounder have an H in their name. Also, I am guilty of not putting two t/s in wittlake's name.

I'll try to remember to keep the H out of Wittlake and just 1 t in Witcraft.
