NORMAN — Norman North senior basketball player Lindy Waters III will be eligible to return to his team just in time for the playoff run.
A 6-foot-5 shooting guard who has signed with Oklahoma State, Waters’ hardship waiver was approved by the OSSAA on Tuesday, and he will be allowed to return for the Timberwolves’ second playoff game, according to OSSAA assistant director David Jackson.
Waters left Norman North in October while facing an unspecified disciplinary issue. He enrolled at Sunrise Christian in Wichita, Kan., and played 10 games at the popular basketball academy.
But he returned to Norman North at the start of the spring semester early this month. He appealed his academic suspension and had it reduced by the school, at which point he re-enrolled and applied to have his OSSAA eligibility reinstated.
As a result of his hardship ruling, Waters must sit out 10 games, equal to the number of games he played at Sunrise Christian, retroactive to the point when he would’ve become eligible upon moving back to Norman North. The 10-game count began from the point when Waters would have been deemed eligible had he only moved away, then returned without participating in games at another school.
So far, Waters has sat out three of the 10 games, and Norman North has six regular-season games remaining. Assuming the Timberwolves do not have any remaining games cancelled, Waters will be allowed to return for the second game of the regional playoffs on Feb. 26.
Norman North is 14-2 and ranked No. 2 in Class 6A, having won 13 straight games. With two of the most talented scorers in the state already — junior Trae Young and senior Marcus Dickinson — Waters will add both size and scoring ability.
He averaged 16.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per game last season for coach Bryan Merritt’s Timberwolves.
By OSSAA rules, Waters is immediately eligible to participate in junior-varsity competition at the school’s discretion.
