No politics from me today. Let’s talk D Day

That is what I was getting at. It is so amazing how that generation just fought through it and kept it to themselves, yet still managed to do so many amazing things after returning to civilian life.

Keep in mind, these men came from families who had recently survived WW 1 and then the Great Depression. This country was tough as hell. Just a different mindset. Truly the greatest generation.

Knew a man who...

Great post @windriverrange. Thank you. About the Battle of the Bulge, I know you have studied it more than most. A lot of people have no idea there was air support because the weather was so incredibly bad. But my father's fighter group was there and flew air support. This is one of the special things he left us kids when he passed away. Click to enlarge.

my grandad survived anzio as well

said it was every cook clerk and mechanic on the line fighting

and naval gunfire saved their ass

The OK 45th played a huge part in keeping Anzio from becoming a disaster btw. Later Mark Clark and 5th Army's crossing of the Rapido (36th Inf Division which was a national guard unit from Texas) and against intelligence reports warning of the perils, basically caused the 36th to be combat ineffective. Mark Clark was thenceforth not very well thought of in military circles and especially in Texas. If memory serves they even had a congressional hearing about this battle.

Too dam cool! I have over 20 books on the Battle of The Bulge, I read and re-read to compare all the opinions and facts. Have driven most of the area and even stayed in Bastogne one night. Incredible area.......that your dad flew in that weather is beyond amazing. Wished I could have met him LR22!

This is one of the things that pisses me off more than anything about the history being taught in public schools/colleges today, if actually thoroughly taught at all. Yes as a country we have warts, all do, but as a country we have freed from tyranny and subjugation more people than any other country in the history of mankind. The sacrifices made are infinite. Yet teaching history now is about pointing out all the bad things we did. In high school there should be a history class, maybe honors class, about US military history. That would be the one thing that would get me back into teaching since have kept my credentials up to date over all these years.

my grandad despised mark clark who was in it for the glory of conquering rome

grandad told me with disgust he ran into mark clark’s son after the war at the pentagon who looked at his thunderbird patch and said something to the effect of

you were one of my dads boys in italy

US Military history was an elective course I took in high school in Oklahoma.
