Next Years Lineup

125: Spratley
133: Richie Figs
141: Jamison/Hughes
149: Swiderski
157: Jamison/Travis/Robideau
165: Lockett
174: Facundo
184: Ryder
197: Merrill
HWT: Doucet

I think the ideal lineup has Hughes at 141 and Jamison at 157 but that’s just my opinion.

With maybe an outside chance Vega beats Hughes at 141 if Jamison goes 157.

I’d really like to see Hughes win that spot and have an outstanding year.

It’s so nice to have so many quality options.

Is there no chance that Swiderski goes 157?

Swiderski says the plan is for Jamison to stay at 141 and Swiderski to go at 149. But you know what they say about best laid plans.
Sure. What we are talking about here is the news page vs. the editorial page.

We can have fun and speculate all we want, and the possibility of Jamison winning the weight at 149 certainly exists.

Not says Swiderski is right or wrong, it’s just information to enter into the conversation that has value over guessing.

Found the Swiderski podcast and just listened to it. Interviewed on the Michigan Grappler podcast, published 4/4/25.

Swiderski's quotes about weight class:
  • "I could go 41/49/57, whatever it is. 149 is my favorite, [where] I feel the best."
  • "It's good for our team, too, because I think Tagen with his style and his strength, his best bet is at 41 and I think he knows that. So yeah 149, that's where I plan on being for a while I guess."

Other highlights from the episode:
  • Says he didn't consider any destination except OSU; entered the portal as do not contact.
  • Wanted to be with DT; says he has similar attacks as DT such as the ankle pick.
  • Wanted to be in a place where he felt he could compete for championships.
  • Was planning to redshirt last year until they needed a 141 guy and he was trying to be a team player and help out. Got hurt in a ranking match.
  • On his health: "I'm about 80%, 85% maybe."
  • Got surgery in November and the plan is to be able to go live beginning of May.
  • Feels he could wrestle the U23 circuit, but doesn't necessarily have to. Will discuss with coaches.
  • Feels he has the ability to win national titles and is confident being in the hands of the Magic Man.
  • Loves being in Stillwater.
  • Pumped for the National Duals.
  • Planning some turkey hunts with Spratley; will film and post them.
  • Has 'Cowboy Casey' shirts for sale as part of a NIL deal with the podcast.

Wants to be a Cowboy = dangerous.

Thanks for this! Can't always take the time to listen to a podcast, so the summaries are nice.

So it sounds like Swiderski wants Tagen to go 141, but it's not necessarily the coaches' or Tagen's plan. TBD!

With the excellent recruiting classes and portal additions, the day is soon coming when the Cowboys have several superior wrestlers at the same weight class. Will they all stay in Stillwater or go to lesser programs in order to get on the mat?

I dont see Hughes staying healthy at 133. He looked huge for 133. I also wonder if weight cut is hard for Tagen. With him struggling, especially in tournaments with 2-3 days of weight check.

HE will get a shot to compete at 149 if weight cut too much and Vega can slide in as a true freshman. It’s simple to me best wrestler goes between 141-149

There are some controllables that both of these guys need to take care of. IF that is done, staff believes they'll be fine/at their optimum weight.

Dang. I was hoping for Swiderski and Tagen at 149 and 157 and Hughes at 141
Think it depends on who is going 157. If it is Facundo or even Lockett then I think having tagen/vega at 141 and swiderski at 149 is a good lineup. Have to think this is somewhat the thinking with Thompson coming back. I doubt he would have been willing to stay with only a promise to compete for the spot with Ryder. I can’t imagine Hughes making 133. Think he will be on outside looking in at either 133 or 141 this year as I’d expect Tagen to win that spot if he wants it.

No inside info but I’d be surprised if Facundo went 157 again. Everything I’ve seen said it was a hard cut for him.

Yeah I have no idea, and I’d think he probably would prefer not to, but I’m just trying to make sense of the Thompson return and how they could potentially get him in the lineup.

Just an average fan trying to learn here, but give me some examples of controllables? Are we talking about not getting too heavy in the off-season or starting to get down to weigh sooner?

Habits and following the proper nutrition plan.

It’s gotten so much scientific that there’s a lot to it. Eating the wrong things can hurt your energy and hormone levels, causing issues when you compete.

There’s a bunch to talk about in the weight cutting discussion nowadays.

I need to go further here I think? In the past, Programs (and still many Programs) just leave it up to the kid to make weight with little instruction on the best way to do it. The old ways are so unhealthy when considering what information is available now, it is amazing there weren't more health issues with Wrestlers. There were and still are many guys just flat-out starving themselves (I know I did) and it really goes to show how tough the sport is when guys were competing in a complete state of malnourishment.

Here at OSU, there is a nutrition expert (our coaches are even experts at it,) a kinesiologist, athletic trainers, massage therapist and a few sports psychologists. This is all for the health of the athlete.

The guys that the staff want are guys that completely buy in, and I think nutrition is a big reason why. Take Tagen and Travis for example. The cuts those guys were on, done the wrong way would expose a serious deficit during competition and you saw that with Tagen last season. I know his cut could've been better, but it was so much better than the year before, it probably allowed him to mentally slip up some...but not much.

It is such a meticulously drafted process when done right, it is truly impressive. Even guys that aren't on huge cuts aren't eating Coney Island and Eskimo Joes cheese fries. It is measured portions of the best nutrition, on a time scale and not to be deviated from...and it works. And yes, this is a year round deal. You don't see guys (or shouldn't) getting 40 pounds over their intended weight and they are prompted to keep a healthy diet all year. This is part of why you don't want guys that prefer to go drink a bunch of beers/party when they have 4-5 days between weigh-ins. It can really impact your performance if it isn't a habit and a lifestyle.
