Next Years Lineup

I thought Hughes looked big for a 133, and his body looked very developed. The only guys in our lineup who seemed underdeveloped from a body standpoint were Carter Young and Surber.
Surber’s situation is understandable. Would consider him one of if not the toughest guy on the team. His injuries were hideous. He would have looked the part if he stayed healthy. Not his fault. His accomplishments as a heavyweight are significantly underrated.

Carter was never meant to be a 149. Same thing for him, injuries severely limited his career.

As much as he deserves the love and praise, it’s not obvious that TT can fully fill into 157. The difference between him and Fish there was dramatic. He’s definitely competitive anywhere you put him. Just looks like he’d be maximized at 149. Long arms and super flexible, like Gumby.

The problem with Hughes seems to be, the line “if he can get to 133” has been a steady drum beat since day one. At a certain point, it feels like it is not a reality. Would love to see what he could do fully committed to 141. It’s tough to have so much talent logjammed at 141 & 149 and needing clarity at 133 & 157.

I shook hands with both TT and Fish at the wrestling celebration yesterday and the size difference was huge. How could anyone believe TT could contend at 157 giving up that much difference in bulk and height.
TT is probably a natural for 149 but he will have his work cut out to get into the starting lineup.

How was the crowd turnout yesterday?

Good point about 133 and 157. I am not sure if we have a natural 157 on the roster. Maybe Robideau? Do you have a feel for whether Jamison could go up to 157? He seemed very strong but slow for 141.

133 will once again be very interesting. Sakamoto and McCommas are unknown commodities but seem to have potential. We could also see a sucked down Hughes or Vega. At least we have some depth.

The thing I worry about with Jamison is, he has a size advantage at 141 & 149. I wonder if that would be negated at 157. Think you are right on Robideau. Facundo and Lockett seemed destined for 165/174.

I like the potential at 133; the reality at that weight is there is no Daton Fix at the moment and even he wasn’t enough over the past several years. Speaks to the strength of the weight class.

I don’t know if there is an AA candidate in there for next year. Too early to tell.

What does Fish weigh now ... 180?

Tbf to Teague. Fish was a big 157. He wrestled 165 for most of his career. But you’re right that Teague is small for the weight.

Updated lineup thoughts? It's looking better all the time!

125 Spratley
133 Rin/Vega
141 Hughes/Vega
149 Swiderski/Jamison
157 Jamison/Robideau
165 Lockett
174 Facundo
184 Ryder/Thompson
197 Merrill
HWT Doucet
This is starting to look really good. An upgrade at Heavyweight would be nice but an improved Doucet is not the end of the world.

I like this lineup. If PSU gets a few untimely injuries/arrests, this is a lineup that could put them in a dogfight if everything breaks in our favor. Not likely, but not impossible!

A mess how? Adding talent seems like a good idea to me. How many AAs did we have at 141/149 this year? Last year?

Let's get messy.
Well we just saw in Unhappy Valley why you might not want to get messy. Not suggesting this happens or anything close to it, but imagine if Tagen feels about Swiderski coming in the way Ryder felt about Rocco coming in. I would be pretty upset if Tagen left. Hopefully DT felt out the situation first.

And I agree with @Mr.OSU that you shouldn't consider your spot safe if you don't at least AA, but I also don't see Swiderski as a clear upgrade. In their sophomore year tournaments, Tagen scored 5.5 team points and Swiderski scored 7.5. Swiderski faced the 14 seed in the blood round and Tagen faced the 4 seed. So to me, it wouldn't be worth bringing him in if it meant losing Tagen. Not to mention how his buddies on the team would feel.

That's obviously a hypothetical, and again I'm not suggesting that's the situation, but that's my long-winded reason for why adding talent and getting messy may not always be the best thing.

I love Jameson and Travis and if they are in the line up next year awesome. However, there is nothing messy about bringing guys in to challenge them.

We are never going to catch Penn State if we are scared to challange kids who have had multiple shots and never AA’d.

I said 141/149 is a mess in the sense that 1) no clue who is going where and 2) gonna be a few odd men out. Feels like we kinda ran with that word a little too far. I’m also loyal to a fault type of guy and I don’t like the idea of Jamison or Travis being the odd men out. Now, whoever comes in and starts crushing it will remedy that lol.

Agreed. Both great Cowboys but we need more from both or at those weights. You don’t win championships with what Tagen has given us in two NCAA tournaments when PSU is around.

It’s not fun to say and is the tough part about championship contending sports programs.

On paper Swiderski is a clear upgrade to both of them. From pedigree and performance. If either can beat him then it’s a good thing for OSU.

Tagen got beat by the 4th place guy, on a bad exchange…had him beat. Got beat in SV-1 by the 6th place guy.

So, with a better draw, he’s easily an AA and should’ve been anyway, just had some bad breaks.

TT seemed to run out of gas and then got hurt. I think the weight cut and short time he had in the year is the main reason he didn’t AA.

So honestly, there is not much difference.

It seems like everyone is penciling Dee at 165 because of one instagram post. Is there flexibility there? Would he be more likely to go down to 157 or up to 174?

Someone on this forum indicated that they thought it would not be that great a cut for Dee to make 157. That would be the best chance for Dee to win as a true freshman if the cut was not too great. That would be our strongest lineup Dee at 57, at 65 Facundo, Ryder at 74 Thompson at 84 ( if he is All American material). Then Troy 25, Figs at 33, Hughes at 41, Swiderski at 49, Merrill at 97 and Doucet at HWT. Thompson and Swiderski would need to commit to wrestling as Coach Taylor would want. Thompson should go to the US Open ready to wrestle and show who he is. If he doesn't show much go back to Dee at 165 and so on. I pick Swiderski because I assume DT before we committed to him had the expectation talk about not partying and committing to a lifestyle change that Hamiti and Hendrickson made. I assume Swiderski convinced DT he is all in and tired of not giving himself a chance of being a National Champion.

I remember Dee beat the National runner-up already at 157 Blaze at a freestyle tournament last year, if I remember right the score was like 8 to 5. Probably at the U20 Tournament.
