National Duals

Truth is, only Wrestling fans watch in any form and nature. So what exactly is your point?

It is a fact it’s easier for a casual fan to follow a dual than a tourney. That’s not debatable.

Anything that highlights the sport is good. Things that highlight the sport that can remove weight from an AD is even better.

You and Cael are the only people not excited about this.

I will say, it should be held at rotating neutral sights and not have a home in Tulsa.
Im not sure you get Richison to pay up the milly if its not in Oklahoma. he wants to grow wrestling here. Also, I heard that all sponsorship dollars that are raised will be added to the pot next year, so the payouts will hopefully grow.

I think the problem people are having with Cael is that, with his position as possibly the greatest coach and wrestler of all time, he has an inherent duty to try to lookout for the future and welfare of the sport. He comes across as indifferent and aloof to the needs of wrestling at large. Instead, he keeps a laser focus on his needs and his desire to win at almost any cost. Unfortunately, the qualities that make him such a great wrestler and coach, don’t translate to a great ambassador and leader, outside of coaching PSU. Selfishness is trait of the greatest of our sport, but not the greatest leaders.
John Smith is the opposite of selfish. I don't know much about Burroughs, but he seems pretty unselfish too.

Maybe, but at the same time, if Paycom sponsors in a market that is currently short on his share, it would be a poor business decision not sponsor.

At the same time as that, if it is a bid process, he has no control on who wins it (or shouldn't.)

It would only draw those fans already invested in the sport. Surely you guys see this. This has zero to do with who I root for. It's just common sense. The mistake here is marketing it as a national duals. It should have been promoted as a charity event. The biggest detriment to the sport is the lack of quality in HS coaching. I live in South Carolina. The coaching overall is abysmal and that's being kind. You can't grow the sport unless we start teaching coaches the fundamentals of coaching. Seriously. I've seen coaches on their phones with their back to the mat as their wrestler is looking for instruction during a match!!! You don't create future fans and donors that way. Then donation of mats and shoes. Many HS gyms have old or used mats.
I am a solid believer that more coverage of the sport creates fans. If this event fills an arena, it will definitely generate more sponsors and TV coverage. With that will come the new fans of the sport and more money for the sport. Example, when ESPN started putting Nationals on prime time, it generated all kinds of new fans. I go to a local sports bar every year for nationals, and most people are there to watch March Madness. After a few matches, a lot of people are watching the wrestling over the basketball. This event would absolutely create new fans and is overall good for the sport. Cael putting it down and wanting nothing to do with it is just selfish. And we can agree to disagree on this. It is all good, it happens! haha

I do agree with you that these schools should at the very least chop up the winnings and put it towards a charity in order to give back to the sport. The money they are throwing out for this event is not a lot to most schools. Definitely donate it to a charity in order to help youth wrestling, because the future of the sport is definitely counting on youth wrestling to grow!

John even admitted to that he was extremely selfish while he was going for his championships during an interview. But,…there’s selfish and then there is selfish. He quit going for record setting world championships in his prime to take over his flagging alma-mater, when he was asked. I believe he took his foot off the pedal a little in his last 5 years, or so, as head coach to try to do what he felt was best for wrestling as a whole. May being selfish did not suit him so much.
Hate to say it but Burroughs is completely selfish, but he is a stud in the very same breath. Selfishness is a mandatory attribute of the greatest at probability any sport. (There will be exceptions to every rule).

John and Burroughs give a LOT of time to the Sport, through announcing, and interviews, and just supporting other people and programs. Maybe I'm missing something

I was going to do a long dissertation but my thumbs got tired. I’m just saying, Cael still seems to be in his selfish mindset. That’s his right. As far as I can tell (all the way from Oklahoma), his focus seems to be only on PSU, not wrestling at large. I’m not sure what this has to do with Burroughs. He’s still competing.

John has done interviews where he talks about how self-centered he had to be when he was competing for National, World and Olympic Titles and Medals. As a Coach over time, he learned to move off that self-centeredness.

You can go to this link to see who are all participating in national Dual 2025. Right now, its OSU, tOSU, NCState, UNI, Michigan and Iowa.

Is it true @Pennstate1985 will be wearing the brightest orange at this event? :)
I do have an orange shirt but every time I wear it, women ask me if I'm a beta. I stopped wearing it. Sorry guys. Speaking truth to power. 🤣

I might actually show up and be the only person wearing blue and white. At least you guys will know its me. As I think about it, I may show up. I can work from anywhere and I have always enjoyed Oklahoma.

I will be wearing a PSU Wresting sweatshirt. Stop by and say hello. I might even buy you a beer. Can't be worse than philly. A yuengling was $18. Besides, you're only an hour from Tulsa. I always enjoyed Tulsa.

I'm a bit more than hour from Tulsa but plan to be there. I'll take you up on that beer. I'll be easy to spot wearing the brightest orange. :)

Was Penn state the only one that didn’t accept? I read somewhere there were 12 initial invites and then they expand out from there. Glad the event got the traction it did. Be awesome to declare a dual national champion. Bet unc and Iowa state are part of the next group.

Iowa St will not be in the bracket, they finished too low at NCAAs to be in the draw. Their team is easily top 5 next season so it’s quite funny they have to sit out.

Cael can do whatever he wants. He wins so everything he does is justified. It so funny how salty a lot PSU fans are about the event though.

I view Cael’s stance as childish. Everyone else loves it and are all in on it. He liked the concept, but because someone else got to it first and funded the interest he refuses to participate.

They are forming a committee to get the best teams going forward and will tweak what they need to do in the coming years.

That being said this is going to be an amazing event! Some of the potential matchups we can see so early in the season will be PURE ENTERTAINMENT! Several weights will have numerous wrestlers from the top 10 and its shaking up to be a fantastic weekend for wrestling fans!
