Minny Updates?

Never claimed to be a genius .

Never claimed to be a genius . Saying Carter Young is going to be an all American this year?
I guess it is crazy to think someone who beat multiple national champions this summer could do that .

I think that he is one of our potential National Champs in the future. I think that he could be an All American this year. Him coming out of redshirt could turn out to be the right move. But I am concerned about Carter's strength and size this year especially after watching the Minnesota dual. Also 141 is packed with talent and I tend to be traditional in thinking that unless you are a superstar like AJ redshirting is the way to go. Not redshirting his first year worked out unbelievably well for Pat Smith though. However first dual anxiety especially on the road for Carter could have been involved and now he could get better and better as the year goes on. Sorry about the sarcasm in my post. Also the old and grouchy fits me but I at least have a thimble full of wrestling knowledge

Tom, I don't know if Wittlake was coasting because I didn't see his match against Minny. But I've heard John say several times he wants him to be more assertive/aggressive. I think John believes Wittlake has a ton of natural ability and he's trying to get him to another level.

Harley, you are easily one of the most knowledgeable posters on this board. You just have high expectations for the program, nothing wrong with that.

Another good article by Roger Moore on Flo. G said he wasn't doing things right off the mat early in his career, but he's made changes now and expects better results. Both G & Daton mentioned a difficult weight cut at Stanford. First time out is always tough.

He did not coast because he put a lot of energy into hand fighting and staying in good position. He stopped aggression and my memory is he did not take any shots the last 2 minutes at least of the match. It seemed to me he should have been pushing for a major or at least thinking I need to get another takedown.

All of this can be true. I was a little frustrated with Wittlake on Saturday. He really didn't push hard for a bonus win Saturday. I don't think he was coasting but you would like to have seen more. That being said, big picture, I'm not worried about Wittlake at all. Kid has wrestled one NCAA tournament and finished 4th. That is pretty damn good. He is going to score a boatload of NCAA points for the Cowboys over his career.

That something is more than strength/coordination/technique/conditioning. He's got those. What is he missing?

I can promise you he isn’t coasting .His opponent was good didn’t want to give up bonus . Know matter what you guys think the other teams are good also . They don’t care if your old and grouchy or clueless about wrestling.
Dugan, I have to respond to this post of yours, specifically, and the others, in general. First, most of us here are OSU fans and should at least be civil to each other. If someone has verbally attack you it is understandable that you might retaliate. That being said, Harley in no way attack you or disparaged your post about Carter AAing, he even said he hoped you were right. He did get a little sarcastic after you attacked him but I believe it was a very measured response and probably less than I might have done in the same situation.

I just wanted to point out where I think you missed the point in Harley’s #30 post “The truth is I am getting old” to which you responded “They don’t care if your old and grouchy or clueless about wrestling”. He said he was old and later said he was probably grouchy (some of his old posts probably support this) but he is far from clueless about wrestling. I think the real point of “getting old” is not old and grouchy but old and scared. I was lucky enough to only have to wait 11 years for my first NCAA Championship as a fan (1978 to 1989). I know some of the elder statesman who post here did all 15 years from ’71 to ’86. Well, it’s been 15 years again (2006-2021) and we older fans only have so many years left so it makes us a little anxious. That’s what I think he meant by saying, “getting old”.

I wasn’t referring to him about being clueless . Harley knows his stuff about wrestling. I was definitely calling him old and grouchy though. Lol

There are a few that are clueless. Harley definitely is not one of them. I hope I’m not speaking for Dugan, but the cluelessness is what pushes my buttons. If anyone thinks that every wrestler we have is going to dominate every match they wrestle, that is not going to happen. I’m sorry, but that’s the truth. It feels like that is the expectation from some and when they don’t see it they start acting negative toward our athletes. Those expectations are not realistic.
In Wittlake’s match vs Stanford he was picked apart. In his match vs Minnesota he was picked apart. I want him to be a 3x champion as much as anyone, but understand wrestling. Watching it for as many years as some on here have it should be very easy to be thankful of having a talent such as him. 4th in his first NCAA tournament. Marinelli at Iowa walks on water up there and I don’t think he’s ever finished that high. There are all sorts of variables that go into wrestling matches. Was Travis sick? How do you score on someone that is a really good athlete that is only trying not to get scored on? It’s a long season and going full throttle in a dual match to get bonus when it isn’t going to matter might not be what they are looking for. Maybe he has been dinged up a little and the plan was to get an early lead and then not push it. We have seen it before where John challenges his wrestlers to work on something else to get out of their comfort zone. Maybe that was the case. Maybe some on here know the answer, but coasting just to be coasting almost certainly was not the case.
The part of being an Oklahoma State wrestling supporter and fan that I’ve always enjoyed is knowing that we are the standard. We aren’t going to win every title. Winning 1/3 of them is pretty dang good. When that’s not good enough for some, it’s how long since the last one. The titles are coming folks. If you can’t see the difference in recruiting, development, and changes in philosophy the program has taken in the last couple of years then it makes it hard to believe that there is a serious knowledge of wrestling.

the willingness to lose

his style is polished control

and i say that with no disrespect to his effort or talents

he could win a title his senior year with grown man 23yr old hammer strength

We see things different. I am tired of being stuck on 34 and so being fine is disappointing to me. The truth is I am getting old and so Young redshirting or not wasn't my point but the decision based when something is wrong with the other wrestler was my question. The year Wittlake didn't get to wrestle in Nationals because of covid my memory says that he was seeded 4th at Nationals. I liked how he came back in the wrestle backs but I don't believe he was improved much if any from the year before. Also I thought he was the better wrestler against Missouri true freshman for 3rd but lost probably because of lack of aggression (he missed the winning takedown by 1 second). He will probably never beat the Missouri kid if he doesn't jump a level because that kid won junior Worlds this year.
At least he doesn’t seem to be regressing. So staying at 4 or improving on that yearly and he’ll be doing his part to get 35. I don’t think his goal is 4th yearly, I would bet it is higher and that he is working his tail off to get there.

his national championship banner
Rim shot, but for real. What's the deal? Coaches often teach athletes to look at the hips. Athletes like J'Den Cox look at their eyes. I've never seen anybody look away. Closest comparison is the black bear. Black bears won't look at a person when they are getting ready to maul him.
