When his former "muse" (Marianne Ihlen) died in August and the letter he had written her a few days before her death was released to the public, it seemed like he was resigned to accepting his own death. He outlined in that aftermath that he was facing his own health issues and didn't think he would last much longer.
PDT, he's a Canadian who has had more of a "cult" following than mainstream success. Kind of think something along the lines of Canada's version of Tom Waits.
You probably know a few of his songs if you heard them, including Hallelujah, which is well known from the 1st Shrek Movie, but which has been covered by literally hundreds of recording artist.
