Kavanaugh hearing

No. Words have meaning. "Are you under the impression that he's the only USSC nominee to have never gotten a hearing?" Means exactly what it implies: he wasn't the only one.

If I'd have ntended to say it was common I would have said so.

So you really believe the fact that three other justice nominees in the 19th century not getting a hearing was relevant to the discussion you were having about Merrick?

Okay....I guess.

Is it bad that my first thought was of Shunt when Merrick was brought up since he was infatuated with Garrett Morgan - inventor of the gas mask. Merrick rhymes with Garrett. Just my bad word association. (just a little insight into the cluttered mind of OstateDChi.)

I'm okay with not giving him a hearing. It would have resulted in the same outcome and didn't drag his family through the mud and muck.

Whereas I believe the Senate properly has a public duty to act on nominations one way or the other.

Yes, it likely would have resulted in the same outcome. The outcome was pretty much pre-ordained so they wouldn’t necessarily have had to drag him through the mud to vote up or down.

Is it permitted by the Constitution? Was it unprecedented? I suppose it would have been better to treat him like Bork and Thomas?

Biden rule and all that.

Fair enough. I don't think they have a duty to act one way or the other since the constitution doesn't prescribe that.

Like I said...if you really thought three examples over a hundred years ago was relevant....okay, I guess.

I understand why the Democrats are trying to keep that from happening....it’s kind of a revenge thing and political grandstanding for votes.

cory booker was spectacular today
he’s perfect for new jersey

Senators Durbin, Coons, and especially Whitehouse brought the facts. Senator Leahy brought the experience and elder wisdom. Senators Booker and Harris brought their Campaign game plans. It was a spectacle but that’s our current Government.

I didn’t even listen.

We all know how this ends up, so why bother?

I think it adds to the information bank to listen to these clowns. Corey booker should have everything he says be dumped in the trash after he railed on the apocalypse narrative today.

I’m getting kind of fed up with the dramatics and the manufactured outrage from all sides.

Today it’s Nike and Kavanaugh.

Tomorrow it’ll be something and something else.

A clip shows Bash, who was in direct view of TV cameras, appearing to hold her thumb and index finger into an O shape, with her other fingers extended. The gesture is commonly known as the "OK" sign, but has been associated with white supremacists recently.

i’m a political science grad

i watched the clarence thomas hearings as a twenty one year old with no understanding of the undertow

now sitting desensitized watching

kavanaugh get set up with the photo op and a mental midget like booker conduct business in the united states senate

i guess that’s why i bother, it’s educational

watching emotionally engaged i’d be fed up as well

What did you learn watching yesterday that you didn’t already know?

I’m not emotionally engaged either, but it is just boring to me at this point. I’ve seen this show before. I’m not really into reruns....except maybe The Wire and Breaking Bad.

for one the photo op setup was fantastic

not self-immolating monk level

but wow 1/9 of 1/3 of our government was sniped in front of god and everybody on a senate hearing room floor

think of it here’s this man dealing with all that comes with a senate hearing, then wammo snap snap pic pic

as if that scenario had anything to do with kavanaugh himself

all totally legal of course

So you learned modern politics isn’t really about fairness or a reasonable exchange of ideas in the hopes of coming to some kind of consensus...that it’s a dirty, nasty business.

Kudos.

I don't think anyone but the most naïve are 'learning' that, but I suspect there is plenty of marveling at the true depths of depravity that the various players have sunk to in our current political cage match.

For the record, I'm closer to @CowboyJD 's position of simply not being interested in the same childish theatre playing out before my eyes, given that the outcome is fairly predictable.

You are missing a lot of history and honors level civics.

It seems to have knocked collusion and hooker payments off of the front page

I can't help but think that the protesters have some inflated sense of self worth believing that America needs to hear from them and not the legislators and the judge.

I hope they trip and fall down the stairs on the way out.

The Krassenstein brothers are ultra far lefties. They have made a Twitter business attempting to make all liberal causes the most important thing in the world.
And Booker did nothing heroic. In fact, he did nothing but hurt his cause. The emails had zero negative from Kavanaugh. In fact, they showed he was consistent 2anted to insure post 9/11 security measures were race neutral.

is booker not the biggest dumbass of all time...and include those democratic morons who stood behind him. It's just the biggest joke of all time and booker is a complete idiot. I hope they remove his ass forever...well, no, never mind, he's the best player on our team. How could he not know this would backfire...he's got to be just a f$$king dumbass through and through. An embarrassment to America.

JD I hear ya! Will be in Australia for a total of 26 days on a working holiday and I so won’t miss any of the political BS. Fortunately I’m only home for 16 days after that then it’s off the Brazil and Argentina, so I’ll be getting back right before the mid-terms without having been exposed to much of the nonsense.

You know from the Kap thread, have been thinking about what you said and tend to agree with your synopsis. I do think they intertwine though because when say a baker doesn’t want to bake a cake for someone that would violate his religious beliefs, they will end up in court and whether we like it or not, there often is a political/discriminatory vein to that depending on which court they end up in and how the judicial system ultimately rules. People with a hug investment in Nike weren’t consulted about the commercial and for a number of them it could be viewed as discriminatory based on CK’s political views about elements of our society. I mainly was pointing out to Been, that his statement seemed to open the door for refusing service to anyone.

BTW the whale watching deal was awesome for about the first two hours. Saw over 100 dolphins but the sea got so rough, for the first time ever I got sick. By the time the humpback whales were 100 feet of starboard I couldn’t have given a crap, just wanted to be back on shore.
