Generally, anti-ship missiles have shaped charges and are meant to enter a part of the ship (they show a fairly consistent circumferal area of damage externally which is also not very large) and are meant to enter the ship then explode internally which blows the metal outwards from the entry point vs an irregular shaped jagged edged area on the exterior of a ship which shows an external charge not shaped and thus pushing the metal inwards (just like the picture shows).
No doubt the Iranians put mines on those ships. Being the morons they are, they also placed them so far above the waterline there was little chance of sinking the ship.
The reasons the Japanese and others are being so cautious is they import the vast majority of their oil through that straight. Before they start accusing anyone of anything they need to rush assets to the area so once again most ships can be escorted by a military vessel. .
